Too much tax on my car

Living right near ohio/kentucky i chose an ohio dealer due to being lower on the list for ordering and getting a hopefully quicker delivery. i didn't think about tax at the time because after hamilton county of ohio's extra county tax, i'll be paying 146 dollars more than if i bought in ohio. doens't really matter i guess because over 60 months it's only about 2 extra bucks a month, but man that bugs me. oh well i guess most of you would pay 146 to get your sky earlier maybe? i hope?

honey dont sweat it, lots of folks have paid thousands extra to get their Sky. 146.00 is nothing - You did great by getting on a shorter list.

We're neighbors

I live in Anderson township. I have a Sky now and a redline ordered. Let me know when you get your car and we'll do a cruise in and compare notes. Did the dealer (where did you order) give you any kind of anticipated delivery date? Where do you stand in line for a redline at the dealership?

ended up going with saturn of tri-county because it was shortest RL list. I am 4 on them. i'm hoping for delivery before or right at may because that's when i'll graduate so i'm not in a big hurry, but at the same time i want it soo bad. i'll let ya know when i get it, but as of now it's just a waiting/guessing game.

I thought most vehicles were taxed based on where they were DELIVERED to. I have avoided many extra hundreds of dollars of sales taxes by having my stuff delivered in the county (where I live) rather than the city I bought the stuff in. On some furniture I bought, it was cheaper to pay for delivery and set up than to pay the extra sales tax.

Maybe cross state lines vs. intrastate is different.

Taxes are different everywhere you go.
Here you pay teh tax where you buy it. However, where you live can affect that total in a negative way.
There is Illinois sales tax, county tax, local tax. Usually the local tax is the only one that changes (they have a reciprocal agreement I think). If you buy in Tinley and live in Tinley you pay Tinley -- but if you live in Chicago, and buy in Tinley -- you pay Chicago (I know I happened to me). . .

NJ has delaware to the south with NO SALES TAX. NJ residents can buy a car there, but as soon as you go to register it in NJ they want to see that you paid NJ sales tax... and will hit you on the spot for it.

Incidentally... Ya'll read about the recent budget probs in NJ that shut the casinos down for 4 days. The end result of new budget is tax rate is 7% as of last saturday (instead of 6), and my Redline will cost me $300 more when I recieve it!

(I wrote this out earlier... and dont see it online now... Maybe I missed the [submit] button, so sorry if this appears twice)

I was hoping that by buying my car outside of Los Angeles County, I would avoid the extra .5% that they charge. Only pay 7.75% instead of 8.85%. Unfortunately in California, you pay the Sales Tax for the County you register the car in.

It should be the same across the country. Where you register/reside determines what you pay in tax.

For example here, PA is right on the border. If you buy a car over in PA, they charge the NY sales tax rate for you when registering...if you are from PA and buy a car here in NY, they charge you the PA rate.

Many states do not charge you a "sales tax" or "title fee" unless you are actually registering the vehicle in that state. For instance, if you buy a car in Delaware even though you are a Pennsylvania resident, you will not be charged any tax for the purchase but you will be charged in Pennsylvania when you register the vehicle. Conversely, if you buy a car in Pennsylvania, you won't be charged a sales tax, but you will pay a registration fee in Delaware when you register the car.

Since Delaware's registration fee is only 2.75%, that ain't such a bad deal.
