Top down, stuck in traffic, starts to rain?

I'm curious, the biggest nit I have to pick with the sky is the lack of a power top. Seems most of the other cars in its class either come with one or offer it as an option. The other day I almost got stuck in a rainstorm while I was stuck in traffic. I live in Miami and we get the occasional flash rainstorms that seem to come out of nowhere. Well, I was stuck on a bridge with no shoulder and traffic was moving about 5 mph. Suddenly it started sprinkling. I crossed my fingers and finally made it past the bridge and was able to pull over and raise the top before it started raining harder. I can also see something like this happening at a stoplight. With a power top I could have slowed down for a few seconds and put it up without disrupting traffic too much.

Anyone had this happen to them yet?

This happened to me. Since traffic was moving very slow, I just stopped, took the minute that is needed to put up the top, and was on my way. No one even honked. I think people understood. It's not like they lost any time. We were caught back up in no time.

The time it takes to put up the top is overrated...I'd pop the trunk, hop out and take care of business. Yes, I'd wait for the buttresses, but I'd get the top up if I were pretty much at a stand still anyway!!!

Agreed. If I were stuck in traffic I'd just get out and do it, it's not that big of a deal. Otherwise, I'd pull over next chance I had.

While on the subject of the top going up and down, I gotta say it bugs the hell out of me when I read some review that moans and groans about how "complicated" it is to lower and raise the top. I always wonder if these guys have ever actually used it. It's not automatic for sure, but as far as manual tops go, it couldn't be much faster for a top that hides away as well and as cleanly as it does.

This scenario makes me wonder about something I thought of when I was driving. I know I can read the manual and probably find out, but is there a safety feature that prevents the trunk release from working while the car is moving? I would imagine that the truck would be ripped off with half of the back end of the car if someone hit the button by accident with their knee while going down the road.

On cloudy days just keep an umbrella handy. One of those big golf puppies would cover the whole cockpit.

Just keep it under 10MPH or you will do a Mary Poppins out the top of that baby!

It Happened To Me

On our last SoCal Ride, coming back from Idlewyld..... The funny thing is, it's almost like the car "beats" the rain. It doesn't feel like you're still, so the rain just falls in. I calmly, coolly and collectedly moved from the left side of the freeway to the right and got off, found a gas station and put the top up. It wasn't a big deal. I wouldn't call it a bad day!

With a automatic you can only pop the truck when you are in park.

There was a thread done on this about a year ago and the button to pop the top does not work when you are going over 2 miles an hour down the road. Neither does it work in reverse....Skip..knower of all things...

I'm not worried about me. I'm worried about the interior getting wet then smelling like wet dog, or the electronics getting wet...or stuff like that.

Yes, there is a safety feature that will not allow you to pop the trunk while the car is in drive. I tried to open the trunk today. I pulled over and my friend jumped out to put the top down and the trunk would not release, but once I put it in park everything worked fine.

well...personally....I'm thinking before I get out of the car to put up the top, it's probably a good idea to put it in PARK!!!!

(Especially since we're discussing doing this in traffic!!! )

It would be pretty hard do, considering that the button is behind the glove compartment door--, the only thing the knee is going to hit is the gloves door--no worries there, the other way is the FOB, that also would difficult since you would have press down on it pretty deep for it to engage and that would usually be in the ignition, and as it was also stated, you gotta be in park-

I think if the traffic is that bad, stopping - getting out and putting the top up is not going to be a big deal. As someone mentioned - you may not even get beeped at. As far as having an auto-top -- how is that going to help??
I have been in the situation a few times where things clouded up and/or started raining. A few times I have been pulled over - putting Sunni's top up along with people who have automatic tops...
Beat them every time....
