Totaled Mayhaps?

I have had my 09 Redline for two weeks... Alright so its was Wednesday evening around 10 pm and I was on a major highway. There was a car in the lane to the left of me, it hit a motorcycle. Motorcycle start to tumble, catches fire and then tumbles into my lane, and thats when i made impact with the now very large fireball. Airbags deploy, ONSTAR comes on and ask if im ok. It was all very scary... everyone (even the motorcycle rider, he should be dead) walked away from it...
All of it is not my fault so insurance is going to cover it, but the have not appraised the damage nor have they concluded it is totaled, they will do that Monday... My worries are on the frame of the car. If its not totaled and they don't replace it with a new car (I have new car replacement insurance) I will be worried about frame problems (bent frame) and powertrain problems for the rest of my ownership.

Sorry I don't have any pics for you guys currently

Glad to hear everyone is okay. That is more important than anything else. The Sky can be replaced but lives can't.

Great to hear that there were no injuries. Hope your next Sky experience isn't the same. Hopefully you will be able to replace what you had.

It was in Arlington, Texas, Highway 360. Just got back from the body shop and my insurance appraised it around 11,000 dollars in damage. I just hope frame problems wont arise later on. They said their was no damage to the motor, so thats a relief... BTW does anyone think i could save money and get the intercooler and intake replaced with upgrades, since it is going through some work might as well look into it.

I used to live in Arlington. I traveled 360 everyday and watched countless wrecks. LOL! I passed many wrecks way before the cops ever got there with people laying out on the ground cars upside down on fire parts and pieces all over the freeway. I had to learn to drive off the shoulder almost every three weeks and take the feeder around just to get home.

Hey, yes upgrade your IC and stuff. Also maybe your car will be all one color now.

Do not rely on an insurance appraiser for this type of thing, you have to be your own advocate. Inspect the car yourself and take LOTS of high resolution pictures. Honestly, $11K is really not a very costly repair all things being equal. That being said however, and this is a big however... if you see that the frame has damage that car will never ride right again, period. The insurance company wants to do things for the least possible cost and they could really care less about a damaged frame.

Allow me to reference a before and after photograph for you (below) and the fact that it took 90 freaking days before they would finally total this vehicle (they replaced the destroyed windshield in 90 days that was nice of them) even though the frame was bent and the engine structure sustained damage.

Wow, that looks like some impact, but the car looks like it took the brunt of it......glad you are ok...funny thing about insurance companies, they want there payments on time, but yet it takes like months to finally get a check for a replacement vehicle.....how is the right?? End of Line

Just throwing this out, playing devil's advocate in a way. It's possible to have frame damage that doesn't adversely impact the drivability of the car. For example, I used to drive an F-150 pickup that had had a low-speed run-in with a tree. Left side of the frame was visibly shoved back about 4", and you had to keep the steering wheels about 20* off center to drive straight. But, the truck still held a straight line if you let go of the wheel, and tire wear was still even on all tires.

That being said, that was a pickup, not a sports car. Things like that are acceptable for a work truck, but maybe not so for a sports car.

Do not take the insurance appraisers word for the damages.
Get your own estimates and appraisals from at least 2 or 3 reputable body shops
in writing
and TELL the insurer that this is the way it is going to be.
I worked in insurance for years and
I would NEVER accept an insurance appraisers estimate of damage to anything.
