Transmission problems

I'm beginning to get a grind in 3rd gear when I'm doing some spirited driving. It kinda pisses me off as the car only has 1700 miles. Now I shift quickly but not hard so its not that I'm beating on the transmission. My ZX2 has a tranny that barely holds stock hp but has been running over twice that for years now. I guess I'll have to take it into a dealer but I know they're gonna tell me theres nothing wrong and it will be a hassle. Does anyone else have problems with 3rd gear?

What are you calling a "grind" ? If it is happening as you shift from 2nd to 3rd, it is very likely to be the way you are shifting. Remember that this is a truck transmission. The shifter travel from 2nd to 3rd is fairly long, and if you get lazy, or in a hurry, you will be letting the clutch out before you have gotten fully into gear.

I'm calling the gears grinding a grind. It has nothing to do with the way I drive well other than it being quick shifts. The clutch will be all the way to the floor and it will not go into third gear. Sometimes it will go into gear but it grinds when going in.

Maybe its just a crap tranny but I would think a sports car would have something a little better than this.

If the clutch is all the way in and it still does it? Take to the dealer.

First this is a great transmission. It is the same one that is in the Colorado pickups and it is tough! Mallet doesn't do anything to the trany when they put the 400HP Vet motor in one. Just the flywheel, clutch and pressure plate are changed.
Now for all of to figure out what might be wrong. Does it do it in any other gear? Also when it grinds is the shifter handle all the way forward? It could just be the linkage is off a little and you think it is trying to go in but it wont go any farther so it grinds. Grinding is usually caused by the gear not being fully meshed.
Big Phil is my Technician. Hey Phil have any ideas?

Have you ever lost a shift into third? What I am saying is had it almost in but not quite? Iffen you have you might have chipped a brass follower in the synchros. It is nothing to worry about and is covered under warrenty. I have done this inadvertently when I do not pay attention to my shift. I pulled my truck tranny apart and there it was, a chip on the brass follower that aligns the synchro with the gear...Skip....

ouch. well that's why i want a CVT. Holy wars aside i think one would be great in this car if there wasn't much power loss from it.

No the only time it ever grinds is when the clutch is completely disengaged and I try to put it in 3rd quickly. I've never missed a gear or let the clutch out early.

Pretty impressive.

Does it only happen upshifting, or does it also happen downshifting ?

I meant with this car, which only has 1700 miles.

Only upshifting.

It probably isn't a synchro. A bad synchro will cause more problems downshifting.

Mine also grinds 3rd during spirited driving, it's been back to the dealer 3 times with the statement of "they can not duplicate the issue".

Yeah thats what I'm afraid of. If thats the case I'll have them ride shotgun... they may not like that though.

Try changing the fluid

Ok Sure I had to have my clutch disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing, fly wheel, and master cylinder changed but while Big Phil did the work he decided to change the trany fluid as well. My trany is smooth as silk now. I looked at the manual and didn't see any time frame/miles that they say change the fluid. Now, I do have 41000 on my Sky but boy is it smooth since the fluid was changed.
Maybe try that and see if it helps.

Any idea what it uses stock? I've had good luck with Mobil 1 synthetic ATF.

Trany fluid

Well the GM part number is GM # 89021806. My dealer changes my oil for like 13 bucks if I bring my own oil. So if you have a dealer like the one here in Mobile I would have them do it the next time you have a oil change. Yes it is a synthetic
