the true opel GT conversion and grille

ALot of people on these forums talk about how converted their sky to an opel gt. Other than the obvious badges, taillights, and reverse light...
what r the other differeances???
I sat in an opel gt and a car show in bologna, Italy and i felt like a was in my car in the states. everything was the same!!
what changes have to be made for me to say i drive an opel and not a saturn?(even tho i love saturn...hhaha)

also...i found an opel gt grille.....preferably id like a custom black grill(no chrome) but i cant seem to find one or have an idea about making one myself without it looking "make-shift". any1 have any suggestions???

thanks,
matt

So far as I know, no one is making a black grill for us. I had to improvise until then and modify the stock one.

I'm waiting on this one....they say it should be available within 4-6 months.:

I have seen a lot of photo shop pics and other peoples mods, but the front end on the silver SKY here is IMO the best I've seen. Someone is actually going to make it???

So they say. I emailed them about it a month or so ago and they are saying 4-6 months....we'll see.

From what I understand, all cosmetic...

From what I understand, the Opel GT is just a Sky RL with the [base] Sky headlamps, different grille bar and badges [Blitz], and different tail and reverse lights.

Not sure about the interior (other than the Blitz logo insert on the steering wheel).

The Opel GT rolls off the same assembly line as the Sky. Perhaps if you could find a line worker, they may be able to tell you if there are other ingredients that differentiate it from the Sky. Not sure if anyone on the forum owns one of each to compare.

I put the Opel GT grill on SPIRIT, as a tribute to two original Opel GTs that I owned in the '70s. To make it fit, I had to take an X-Acto knife and carve away part of the molded rubber bumper! (The SKY has a raised "cube" that fits behind the Saturn emblem that is incompatible with the Opel GT grill.)

When I thought about it, I figured that either they had to hack away that part on all Opel GTs coming down the line to mount the Opel GT grill, or they had to mold a totally separate rubber front end. Of course, the latter is true... They had to mold a separate front bumper because the Opel GT does not have the amber side marker lights that the SKY does.

The rear rubber is different, too. The license plate area is wider, and the Opel lightning bolt sits flush, whereas the Saturn emblem sits in a raised square. If you attempt to remove the rear Saturn emblem the raised square will remain, conflicting with the mounting of the Opel logo in the back.

So, while you might think that you could just peel off a couple of shiny bits and stick on something new - in reality you would have to replace the complete rubber front and rear bumpers to get a true "Opel GT impostor." To do it really right you would need a new steer wheel hub, emblems on the rims, hood liner, door sil plates, seats, tail lights, reverse backup light... and even a cigarette lighter which I think is standard on the Opel GT.

There are indeed lots of little cosmetic differences.

And do be aware that if you want to mount an Opel GT grill on a SKY you will need a knife to carve away part of your rubber bumper to make it fit!

I removed the rear bumper cover and took it to the body shop to have the hump ground off. Since its a molded piece, they had to fill in the back side with epoxy so it would not be too thin. They painted the whole piece and I reinstalled it.

Not to hard to remove the piece, took about 1.5 hours.

Body shop had it 3 days than right back on.

The main reason for this is I'm going to install a center stripe, and the hump was just not going to work for me!

Okay, that makes sense... I knew it had to be more than just an X-Acto knife like I did up front!

The body shop did an excellent job! Looks great!

It's an Opel now! Looking good ceeker Hey did you redo the interior yet (ie: Steering wheel logo, or seat embroidery)??
