Trunk Wet!

Hello Everyone!

I'm a proud new owner of a '08 Silver Sky. With that said, I love the car so much but I just noticed that the carpet in the trunk is slightly wet right below the spoiler area. Does anyone know if this is common or if I just didn't have the trunk closed correctly? I went through the car wash about 3 days ago but just opened the trunk tonight so not sure if that is it either! Let me know if anyone has any ideas. Thanks so much! -Robb

Don't make me feel bad.

Is the car not meant for the car wash? I'm sorry but this is my first convertible and my dealer said it wasn't a big deal as that's how they wash their vehicles.

I'm now going to cry!

So do you think that's why the carpet in the trunk is wet?

Does everyone wash their own then? Can I go to one of those self serve car washes with the high pressure hose? I live in a condo so it's not like I can whip out the garden house in the front lawn. Any help is appreciated. Thanks! -Robb

I always hand wash the Sky. The other three cars go to the car wash. I wouldn't think anything high pressure would be good for the seals and top, but I don't have any actual experience with high pressure washing.

I just hope the car wash was the reason why the carpet got wet...that way I'll just never bring my baby through there again.

Open up your trunk and look at the area behind where your seats are...

The material that extends from the top goes down and ends in a funny looking funnel. The bottom of each of the two funnels should be plugged into holes in the bottom of the trunk. These funnels where all the excess water is routed when it rains or when in a car wash ...

If the funnels aren't plugged into the holes in the bottom of the trunk, your trunk will fill with water.

I know what I'm saying may not make much sense - but when you look in your trunk, it will all make sense.

Yea lots of thread on water leaks going thru the car wash. Never heard of a spoiler leak however are you sure that is how the water got in? That is number 1, keep in mind that high pressure on the convertible is not "advised". Read the manual it even says no car wash. IF your dealer told you it was OK, must of a sales person that don't know anything about convertibles. Make sure the pockets behind the rear window are connected, donno if they still use the pocket stuffer, or maybe newer better materials. The rain/water is channeled along he edge of the trunk and out around/above the license plate area. IF to much water over whelms the channels then water could possibly over flow into the trunk.. You can do the "Can I go to one of those self serve car washes with the high pressure hose", YES, but again, be careful where you point the gun..

I know what I'm saying may not make much sense - but when you look in your trunk, it will all make sense.

So I just went to look and the funnels are in place and look like they are working correctly. Additionally, the wetness isn't in this area so I don't think we have an issue there. The wetness is directly under the spoiler area on the rug. I know the spoiler is not leaking because the carpets that attach to the actual trunk that comes up when opened is completely dry. I'm saying it's the car wash and the water that goes through the little canals around the truck area got overfilled due to the water pressure. I can't image it's anything else since it's isolated.

Since the funnels are in the right place - no problem. Remember to keep an eye on them in the future since they have popped out on a few people.

Also - if water gets in and it is under the carpet, the water will pool in the back area of the trunk area and the carpet will be wet in that location - even if the leak is in the front...

I'd not worry about it unless you see wetness after the rain. As you are thinking - this could all be the result of the carwash!

I have the same problem. The trunk has side channels that direct water from the sides into a holding well just below the spoiler, above the carpet. The holding well then dumps the water out the back exit just above the license plate. The holding well is slightly deeper than the dump point, so a little bit of water will settle in the well. There is a wiring tube that runs through the holding well. The gasket on the tube sits below the water level of the residual water that sits in the well. The gasket on my vehicle (and I dare say this is your problem as well) is not sealed properly. So water that sits in the well will leak through the seal and drip on the carpet below.

Solution: Seal the wiring tube and you'll solve the problem.

Edit: And don't feel bad about the car wash. The carpet will have still gotten wet even if you hand washed the vehicle....and it will get wet when it rains. Water is designed to flow to the rear well and out the back. So any water that gets on the trunk and down the sides is going out the back. And if it goes out the back, and the wiring gasket isn't sealed, it will drip on your carpet.

Many of us are very, very, very protective of our babies - uhm . . . I mean our Sky's.
We lovingly hand wash our babies using microfiber . . . - uhm . . . I mean our Sky's.
And several of us have had very bad experiences with dealers giving baths to our babies when they service them -
uhm dam . . . I meant to say our Sky's,
even though the dumb@$$ dealer service techs were told "DO NOT WASH".
And the idea of somebody taking one of them through a car wash positively sends chills down our spines !

oh, heDOUBLEtoothpicks !! Can you tell some of us are positively beyond anal about our cars ?

The only time the trunk carpet got wet in my Saffy was when the small cooler I used to use tipped over and spilled out some water.

I have never had this problem - not from washing or driving in the rain.

The only water i have seen in my trunk was just the area below the back window, but thats about it for me...and Car Wash is ...the last thing you need is for your top to get all faded, i spray the top with water and use the Absorber to wipe it off and no soap on the top at all...SteveSky67

Hey Steve - one more thing...

Your top won't fade if you put it in your trunk when you are driving out in the hot sun!
