Vanity Plates Finally!!

Well - the state FINALLY got around to approving one of the 3 choices I submitted in my request for vanity plates.
The envelope showed up today - And the winner is ... SAFFYRE !
Looks great - now I have SAFFYRE in my chrome frame that says SKY at the bottom.

Congrats, I wanted ChiliSky but it was one letter to long. Glad you got one of your pick of 3 though.

This is one area where NY really has it together. You can go to the DMV website and keep trying until you find one unused. They even show you how it looks on the plate. You order it right there, they even have 100's of specialty plates availible

That's a good idea. Down here in Florida, you have to go to DMV, and they check for you. They will do it all day long, but still, it's much easier if it could be done on the net. We also have hundreds of specialty plates to choose from.....almost too many.

Oh, by the way....while on the NY site, I tried about 15 differant ideas I had, and none were available. Had the same problem here.

They have a similar website for Michigan. I did mine that way, but it turns out that "V8 SKY" was a resticted format, even though the website let me do it. I had to call the Department of State in Lansing and talk directly to the Personalized Plate office (after 30 minutes of being transferred). I did get it after that call.

Here you can check online ... sort of -the state's public part is way behind the actual state system timewise.
Then you take a list to the License Bureau and go through it with them to make positive which ones are & are not available. (I took a long list on my 3rd visit)
Then you submit 3 choices (with explanations of what it is supposed to mean) with a check then that goes to a "committee" who looks at them, & then makes various checks:
if someone else was approved for the choice before they got around to you
if it is something that could be considered porn, vile, or bigoted
if it could be considered insulting in any known language of this earth
Then they pick one they like and send you your plates & registration.
Takes a while.

Sounds like a government organization to me. Too much paperwork, decided by a fat, overworked, slow committee, and subject to the interpretation of people who need everything to be so watered-down as to not offend ANYBODY!

What does the plate mean? Who cares? The only consideration should be if it is already taken.

SkyBaby...you are stuck, I am afraid, with the one you have. They can not fit "SexySkyQueen" on one plate. Perhaps in Europe, with their goofy shaped plates, but not here. Sorry.

Well - all these hoops to jump through were caused because some people sued the state over approved plates that they considered to be derogatory. Seems that they meant other things in another language - even though it was nothing like what the car owners intended.
