Odd, I never noticed that till you pointed it out.
The wiper blade rests right over the top of it. I wonder if it has anything to do with determining temperature or perhaps a use that has not been implemented yet like automatic wiper blades?

I have noticed that one too - I think the fact that the windshield wiper covers it so perfectly that 1994SC2's guess sounds more practical...
Hey we can just ask the dealer... Yeah right ![]()

Something I noticed on the way home from the dealer with the new R/L, I went through a rain storm. It started with just a sprinkle, but as it got heaver, I went to intermittent mode. pretty soon Int mode was at top speed, still a short lag between wipes. When a "Heavy" wave came, the lag stopped and wipers were hauling A--. Could there be a sensor in that little window?

I noticed "scratches" inside mine. How about y'all? I was thinking it was some sort of identifier for the safety-etched windshield.

Well, after reading the shop manual, they are called "blackout voids". The only reference in the manual to them is when installing wiper arms to locate the wiper blades at the top edge of these voids. Also, no mention of these "blackout voids" in windsheild replacement section either (no wires to disconnect/reconnect with the removal/replacement of the windsheild). Someday we will know if it is just a reference position for the wiper arms/blades or something else. The wiring diagram for the wipers make no mention of this either. Believe it or not the wiper functions are controlled by the body control module. Gary

We do have speed sensitive wipers but thats all that it varies by. It could be drizzling or pouring the wipers will go at the same speed given the same wiper setting and speed of the car.
