What do other people think about your Sky?

When I first saw the Sky, I loved the look. When I saw the price, I loved it even more. I have to admit that I was looking at Porsche Cayman S before I brought the Sky. But with today's economy and sports cars being 'unpractical', I brought the Sky as my second choice. I have absolutely no regrets about my purchase and adore the Sky.

Now. I drive the car on a daily basis and I have to say that there are people on the road that have such hatred of the car. On more than two occasions, I have had trucks and large suv telling me to 'get that little piece of sh!t' off the road. Don't get me wrong, I get the approving looks also but it bugs the hell out of me that the Saturn does not get the respect for a roadster or sports car. I can't shake the feeling that I would not get this sitting in a Porsche.

Tell me your thoughts.

Can't say I've ever had that kind of negative experience. However, I try to keep my distance from large trucks/SUVs etc.

I also try to say away from larger vehicles, we sit so low I feel like I need one of those flag they put on ATVs so they know I'm there.

I really doubt a driver with that kind of anger or jealousy is venting because you're driving a Saturn. They're venting because you are driving what appears to be a sporty EXPENSIVE roadster, and they don't wish to share the road with a fast, sporty, "rich prick". The SKY looks rich and sporty to EVERYBODY, especially the everybody who don't follow sports cars.

As for the Porche, you might not get that anger and jealousy. But not because those angry and jealous drivers have "respect" for a Porche. No, not at all. If the anger and jealousy is rooted for the reasons noted above, you won't get it driving in a Porche because those types of people don't see a Porche as a sporty EXPENSIVE car. We know better, but the ignorant do not.

The Porche looks rather plain to those who don't follow sports cars. In fact, one of its selling points is the plain look. It is less likely to get keyed. Less likely to have stuff thrown in it (with top down)...and yes...less likely to get angry and jealous stares...and comments...from the ignorant....BECAUSE it does not look rich.

Your best bet when encountering such anger and jealousy is to wave and smile, or do nothing. I trust these poor souls are few and far between....so they probably don't experience smiles and waves very often. You lose nothing when you return spite with a smile. If they are truly normal folk having a bad day, they will feel bad after further reflection. If they are true ignorant *******s...well, they probably have a miserable existence, in which case it's best not to give them an excuse to bring you into their world.

Edit:

Watch the first 60 seconds of this clip. Our SKYs bear a slight resemblance to the Ferrari, and can be confused with the Ferrari by those who don't follow the genre.

Were you driving extra ... cautiously (read as slow)?

I think people react to nice cars moving slowly about the same way they do to nice cars parked in two spaces. (And by slowly, I mean posted limit, when the rest of the world is doing 5 - 10 over.)

I still get, sometimes wildly enthusiastic, positive reactions but I live in a part of the country where you still don't see many Sky's. I have family that lives in more remote ares so when I visit them its kind of ridiculous the reactions I get when I stop to get gas. I still love it though. The only negative reactions I have had have been from the 2 BMWs who have challenged, on a closed course naturally, and have been so embarrased with the results they turned off . I even had a guy come up to me at my grandson's first birthday party and say" Hey, that was me behind you last week when you were crossing the dam..., until you passed that car." I cross tha dam at least 4 times a day every weekday so who knows. Nothin' but good reactions here but your situations do sound like envy so be careful and enjoy!

I wouldn’t worry about today's economy. I worry about my economy. Your personal position probably isn't going to change dramatically unless your job is tenuous, your mortgage is about to double or you planned on liquidating assets in the near term. This is all cyclical. Is the 2-seater SKY more practical in your life than the Porsche might have been? As far as people telling you to get that POS off the road… yes, I would question if you were going ‘slowly’, I might also suggest that is a function of where you reside. That doesn't happen here in The South. Moreover, the life you have led should get you respect, not the trinkets you surround yourself with. I find it hard to ‘hate’ a car. You didn't buy a mid-life-crisis-mobile to make up for a small wee-wee, did you? -J

I have to say, it is car envy, and may be a Tri-state area thing. It has happened to me a couple of times. Once it was an insane SUV owner, and the other time I got cut off (VERY CLOSELY) by an ass in a car and had to slam the brakes. Everyone handles others in their own way and deals with things they way they see fit. I react depending on my mood. But I say the middle finger or maybe an invitation to a discussion on the side of the road is usually how I react, but I can play maniac too, so don't go by me. Everyone has a big mouth in a car, but face to face is another game!

A good friend of mine, who has had many sports cars, and has gotten these reactions in the NY/NJ/CT area has what he calls his serial killer method.
You start by staring at him with very wide eyes and make no gestures, slow and get behind him and follow him wherever he is going. Just drive behind him and stay there. It takes time but that scares the hell out of people, even a-holes with big mouths.

I would probably agree that this more prominent in the tri-state area. I don't know if it's me but people have just lost their respect for other people or just don't care anymore. It's probably a side effect of today's outlook on life and dealing with uncertainly resulting from the subprime mess, war, oil prices, etc..

All in all, I'm going be ordering a new wind restrictor for driving into the city with the middle finger up title 'F' you all' . That should cause a riot.

Wow, I usually get grins, thumbs ups and hoots. Never yet had anyone get pi$$y at me. I think you may be right...the area of the country may really make a big difference. One of the reasons I moved out West when I turned 18

I may be right behind you some day soon, this part of the country is so over priced and over crowded that it makes people angry. That is why there are sooooo many displaced NY'ers all over the country, eventually you need to get out or it consumes you!

So far, here in Tampa, and the places I've driven around the state have all been good reactions. Can't say that I've had anyone get upset at me, even the bmws and nissan 350s I have blown past on the road. Most of them seem to recognize that we are going to have to be accepted for what we are. The best value in a sports car in America.

I get at least 2 good reactions everytime I take the car out, and have only gotten 2 bad reactions in the 1 1/2 years since I got my SKY, but as Pearl said, it is rough and sticks to you. It is not a SKY only thing, matter of fact I got a LOT more NASTY REACTIONS in my MINI COOPER S!

Some people are just unhappy and are looking to share their unhappiness. What better place to drop a frowny face than on a permagrin.

The car does seem to bring out aggressiveness in other drivers.Although I don't think I have ever been given the your number 1 hand signal.
Lot's of complements though.
I have had the strangest vehicles try to race it chipped diesel ford pickups, Jeep CJ's, Econobox SUV's.
Watched a guy in a little Toyota get a ticket the other night. On a posted 30mph road because he started getting all aggressive around me and didn't see a Federal Heights Patrolman lurking in the shadows.

Think some people should quit believing the car bashing articles they read in Car and Driver.

People just suck sometimes...especially when they get behind the wheel. 9 times out of 10, no one would ever act as rude to someone while not encased in their vehicle. I was trying to find the Allstate commercial with the family eating dinner in the middle of the road, but couldn't....that's a great commercial about this situation. Anywhoo, I have never gotten anything but appreciative looks and comments while driving the Sky....so far anyway....

Edit:
