When is a VIN issued?

Can anybody tell me at what point in the order process a VIN is issued and what is the normal waiting time after that for delivery? I did a quick thread search but couldn't find an answer for this. I have a R/L on order.

A vin is issued when the car is produced. There is no normal wait time. Some have waited 9 months some two months. It depends on your Dealers allocation. What number in line you are.

I was #1 in line when I placed my order. I e-mailed you my order yesterday because my order number didn't show up in the system when you checked. There is something mysterious here..

Is the Vin# issued after it is produced or when it is actually conceived on the production line.
Nice piece of trivia information.

I have to think the actual VIN is born the moment the chassis hits the floor. Since they build onto that - everything has to go on an object (asset) so the object is designated by a number - so the number exists once the order is OK’d to produce. However it does not physically exist until something is laid down to represent it - hence - the chassis....

My dealer did not make their quota so thet approached our CT dealer in Danbury (state's biggest dealer), they inturn, moved me to 1 on the list, and we received word that
TPW (targeted production week) is 4/2/07. Does this mean I will receive
a vin number during that first week in April? Also, is there a place on the web where we can witness to the code number changes as they occur?

Well if they build it from 4/2 tp 4/8 that is when the VIN would be generated. Remember T = Target -- not Fer Sure!

The only place you can see the VIN for the first time is have your dealer print the GM Workbench on the day your car goes Produced... That will have the VIN on it...

I put my thousand dollars down on Oct 20th 2006 and only went 3000 this week. This places me in a 4 to 6 month wait state. I have been chomping at the bit with my dealer since he was not able to make his quota and didn't
mention it 'til I pressed his buttons. Hope you hear from yours soon!

I put my $1500 down last Sept and my Watertown dealer
in the last month said I was #1 on his list, but if GM does not pickup the order all I have is a yellow piece of paper for
the money. The Watertown and Danbury dealerships have the same owner. Are they telling everyone they are #1? All I want is an honest answer of when they can get the car based on their allocation.

I must agree, the truth will set us free! Turns out my yellow order sheet reads September 20, not October. Now it seems we are both number 1 on the list out of Danbury...What Deluke can find out may help us both understand our status....come back.....

i notice some of us sky customers after they receive the order number (mine is KWHBQ6 "ordered supposedly 3-22-07 after a deposit on 8-2-06). my question is how do you track the porgress thought these codes? the dealer does not know anything about the "codes" that are shown. can a customer track the progress of does someone on this forum track the progressfor all of us? i want to make sure the car is actually in the construction stage and not just sitting waiting for some allocation date to come up 6 months from now. many thanks in advance.
