A whole parking lot, and they need to park near me
A friend of mine and I went to the movies tonight and, since it was a week night the large parking lot was mostly empty. So I parked at the far end of the lot, thinking that would prevent anyone else from parking near me. I took just one spot at the end.
Well, of course when we come out some jerk had parked right next to me! Literally hundreds of spaces all closer to the door, and this jerk had to park right up next to my brand new RL. Why do people do that? I was tempted to wait for him or her to come out and ask them. I checked for door dings, but it was dark and the car is black, so I didn't see any. I'll check again tomorrow. Very annoying!

Same thing happened a couple of days ago......all alone out in the boonies at Target.........I come out....cars on both sides....tons of spots closer in.....plus it was a really windy day....blowing junk around..including......(here you have to play the Jaws music for this).....a shopping cart slowly rolling (but picking up speed)...in the direction of the Sky........SCARY!

At work the parking lot is divided every 20 spots or so with a curbed peninsula area, where they have some landscaping. I try to grab one of the spots next to the peninsula so I can shift closer to the curb and only have one car next to me.. and even then it has a lot of extra cushion room between that car and I.
After a recent snow storm, the roads were clear but piles of plowed snow remained, and I drove my sky in. That first spot next to the curb was mostly filled up with icy plowed snow... less than 1/4 on the edge closest to the next spot was asphalt. No car was parking there, so I took the second spot. Would ya beleive someone in a Subaru Outback drove up the snow/ice pile and parked there... to make matters worse the outback was actually on an angle and leaning towards my car... making it almost impossible to get into the sky! Why?! Why!? Someone had to stop and put though into this... Will my car fit? Can I make it up that incline? What about that other car? Ahhh hell with it... lets go for it. idiot

On the other side of the coin, went to dinner last night and the restaurant had the WIDEST spots I have ever seen for parking! It was really nice. If you park in the center you can open both doors and neither gets to the yellow line of the spot next to you!
Needless to say that and the fact that their food was very good - moved that place up to the front of our list!

I have the same remote parking philosophy, and experience the same idiots who have to park next to me.
I have a theory that explains some of the behavior. If its raining, and I don't park way, way out at the edge of the lot, but just maybe 10 spaces away from the main "clump" of cars, then I suspect some of those people can't tell where the edges of their cars are (and there's a whole bunch of those people out there). I think they're actually somewhat considerate. If they can park where there aren't many cars around, they won't hit anyone. However, they can't tell where the car fits in the spot, so they have to find a single car alone that they can park next to and align with. When I actually see the driver, its usually a blue-haired old lady in the last land yacht her husband bought before he left this world. Of course, when I'm so far out in the lot you can't see the store over the horizon and someone parks next to me, then its likely they're just a clueless drooling moron (and there's a whole bunch of those people out there). When I see these drivers, they're usually "tuner-wannabes"

I really don't understand people. I do my best not to park next to SUVs or anything else where they might have trouble getting in without dinging my car (or truck). I've seen people park their cars just a few inches from my husband's F150. No way he can get in without his door touching their car. Makes you want to fling it open. Maybe they're trying to set us up...

At the local mall there is one parking space that for some reason is wider than the rest at the Sears tool section entrance so of course that's the one I always look for first. This being the same type of parking area that Ahnuld described, I parked next to the curb leaving plenty of room between my vehicle and the next one over. When I returned some jerk had pulled ( wedged) his small car directly over the space dividing stripe. I had to back out so my passenger could get in and yes there was the first paint chip.

One place I saw an example of respect for car in general - but in particular Sunni1, was the local Pep Boys. I figure all the people there are car people any way, so it helps. But I see people checking the car out all the time - and -- this is a shocker. I parked with a space next to me (Actually two) at the end of a row and a guy pulls up with a car and parks in the spot next to me and gets as far away from the car as he could. Then he stood there, looking, for a long time (I was waiting in check out...)

Sometimes just sometimes others are thinking like us. What I normally do is look for spaces that empty are next to expensive brand new cars. Benz, BMW Vettes, other Sky/SOL Z4's anything brand new and expensive, and sporty looking will do I then pull in next to them, as close to the main entrance of where I am going. My assumption is that these people hopefully will be as anal as I am when they open their doors. After, if they ding my car, the possibility exists that they would of put a ding in their doors edge also or chip their paint.
Like minded people think alike. I pulled into a hotel parking lot, both spaces next to me are empty. The next morning I find a Corvette on one side of me, and a BMW Z4 on the other--You got to figure that they thought the same as us, "hey let me park next to that cool looking nice, clean, blue roadster, they won't ding up my door when they leave I bet." So I look for the same chances when parking--It works BTW--So far I have no dings following this procedure. (so far)

I think some people do it (park right next to a Sky that is parked out in boo-foo egypt) on purpose...I really do!
I firmly believe that some people will deliberatly park next to us, even though there could be hundreds of open spots much closer to the door. I think they do it to just to get a rise out of us because they know when we come back out to our cars and see that some doofus has parked next to us, they know that it will piss us off. And guess what...they're right! Maybe I'm just paranoid...but that's how I feel.

Sky Baby had a similiar occurance - best you can hope for is just that people will be more mature in the future, you arent harming anyone by giving yourself more peace of mind when you park.

Not much problem here! I park way out in the parking lots and also take up multiple spots and butting up to a light pole at Wal-Mart. Most of those idiots just drive around looking for an empty handicap spot. IDIOTS....

Yes... True confessions here... Back in the days when I drove an old VW beetle with dents and no body parts of the same color... I used to go out of my way to park next to really nice cars. I fugured it made it less likely that someone would abscond with my pride and joy. Really, why steal a junkbox when there is a really nice expensive looking beauty right next to it?
Anyway, the benefit of agrivating somebody as some sick joke never crossed my mind! Why would they park so far away anyway? I figured they just wanted to get more exercise by walking a little farther. Now that the roles have changed... I feel your pain.

Wow, thanks everyone! After I posted that I thought I was being foolish, but not anymore! I also look for end spots (that spot last nigth was an end spot) and failing that, I look for nice cars to park next to for the same reason as posted. Failing that, I look for cars with 4 doors, because 4 door cars have shorter doors. I never park next to a junker.
I also have never parked in such a way as to deliberatly use more than one spot. Last night, my friend suggested that, and I said it would probably get me keyed and, in any case, who would park near me? He agreed so we went in to the movie. Also, someone suggested there is more at work here when this happens. I have to wonder if there is some kind of herding instinct at work. Are some people just so mindless that their subconcious takes over and they just park next to the first car they see? Who knows. It's just very frustrating.

I think one thing that happens is they park there to check out the car, and then just walk in from there rather than relocate.
Second you didn't mention what kind of car it was but maybe they were just as concerned for their cars safety as you were yours. Third, if you drive it at all, something is eventually going to happen. Stone chips, door nicks or whatever. Do yourself a favor and lighten up. Life is too short ot worry about the small stuff. |
