XM antenna converted to radio antenna?

Gang,
So tragedy struck today (or inspiration?). Someone here in Miami, FL stole my shorty antenna (funny if you're a member here. If you're reading this, I send you a million blessings and hope you enjoy it to no end).

Anyways, I don't have XM and the XM antenna is just sitting there... and it hit me! How cool would it be if I could use THAT antenna (the shark fin) as my radio antenna and remove the existing leftover radio nub (fill in the hole and have it repainted).

Has anyone ever tried this? Is it doable? Thoughts?

THX!

*ss*

The frequency of XM is no where close to the AM and FM band, therefore the XM antenna would not work.

I have seen a prototype shark fin that had AM/FM/XM receiving elements in it, but the last I heard it wasn't very good. It was also about twice as big as ours.
That was a couple of years ago, so there could have been some progress. I'll have to talk to our antenna guru about it.

JoeK is correct, the XM antenna fitted to the car cannot be used.

The lower the frequency, the bigger the antenna. Simple physics. Low frequencies are longer wavelengths so need a longer antenna for efficiency. AM is in the 100 to 200 meter range. Where the satellite frequency is in the centimeter range.

Apart from the wrong wavelengths, it'd be a huge pain to rewire the antennas, ANYway! Much easier and cheaper (and better) to just get a new antenna rod.

I bought a shorty antenna (well 2), and the shorter of the 2 will become my backup when my other gets stolen. Ebayed the 2.5" one, and bought the other at the parts store. The price for both was around $20 total.

I found my thread locker the other day so maybe I'll put a bit of that on there to make stealing it a bit tougher.

It's a cool Idea though. You'd have to "delete" the hole left from removing the original. My brother was in the auto industry in Vegas, and has a number of friends in the industry that do custom work. I've thought about deleting my door handles if they could do it cheaply enough. Their work speaks for itself as it can be seen on many movie/TV autos.

Looks good without the handles. Panel fitment, anyone? Maybe it was just an optical illusion?

RK Sports hoods are notorious for bad fit on the sky. They are poorly made. If you need a hood, see Norm's Fiberglass.

Bad fit or no, I couldn't "just live with it", and I'm not necessarily a freak for immaculate nor for perfection.

I've looked at the Norm's everything. If I wanted/needed stuff like that, I'm pretty sure I'd order it from there.

You could always install the new antenna using red Loctite if you wanted to be sure it stays put....

Yeah, that's the plan. Have a replacement on the way. Sucks that this has to be done as a precaution though.
