Best SOUNDING Exhaust???

Ok. I'm getting old. I used to care only about performance. But after getting my Fiat Abarth, which comes from the factory with absolutely NO muffler and sounds like a mini 458 Ferrari......I'm now more interested in the best SOUNDING exhaust for my Saturn Sky Redline. Can I get some feedback here from people who have heard several? Maybe I should just take off the muffler, like the Abarth?! Has anyone tried this? Thx.

Grats on the Abarth, great car. If you are looking for an exhaust with no muffler you could always go for the Solo Street Race Exhaust. It is the one I would have gone for if I didnt already have the Magnaflow (which is also an amazing exhaust, has a muffler though). Was thinking of getting a muffler delete myself

Solo Street Race - LOUD!!

Saturn Redline Performance Exhaust System | Redline Street Race 2007-2009 Saturn Redline 2.0L Turbo | Performance Exhaust System

Magnaflow - Very nice, sounds great tame under 2500RPM, Screams 3500 +

MagnaFlow Exhaust Products - For Trucks, Suv's, American Muscle, Diesel, & Sport Compact Vehicles

You will not go wrong with either.

Great suggestions

So, there is a system without a muffler! Have you actually heard this one? I'm sure it's loud, but is it a nice tone? Haven't heard of Solo Street Performance. Reputable company or just some muffler shop bending pipes? The RPI and Magnaflow look good too. I wish I could hear all three side by side.

Thumbs up

Well, we just had a recent post from one of our members that DID create a no-muffler pipe setup, only thing is, it's for a Sky 2.4L... here is the thread.. by Ag_Sky..

Sounds great. My experience is that turbos quiet an exhaust quite a bit. So it certainly shouldn't be any louder. I'm leaning towards a no-muffler setup.

It makes your sky sound like a track car if that makes any sence. And yes Solo Performance is very reputable. In fact they also make the Hi-flow cat that most of us with Redlines and GXP's are running.

As I said, I would have bought that exact system had I known about Solo prior to buying my Magnaflow.

Here is a video of my sky with a Street race exhaust on the dyno... gives you an idea of tone.... My only complaint is after a long ride in the car (more than an hr) at 70mph it got annoying.. other than that, I drove the car daily for an hour drive in the summers. No issues.

Saturn Sky Redline 352 whp 380 ft lbs Torque - YouTube

I would say also to remove the cold start high idle. That was an annoying byproduct of the SR/HF cat and the cold start features of the stock tune.

More Questions?!

Thanks for posting the sound links. They were very helpful.

I'm guessing that the Solo Street Race exhaust does not come with their low restriction catalytic converter? Is it worthwhile to get one of these while I change the exhaust?

Has anyone compared the stock converter with the Solo Performance one (pictures?!). Is the stock one that restrictive?

Briefly, what was done to get 380 RWHP from your Sky? Why did you sell it? Too radical for normal driving?

There's a tuner here in St. Louis called Performance by Joe. He has a customer with a Sky that's making 450 RWHP (from memory. Maybe it was 420). According to Joe, all he's done is change the turbo, injectors, and exhaust. It's making 37 lbs of boost with--according to him--no problems in over 5 years.

Thx.

The High flow converter gives you around 30whp if you have a tune on the car. The catless is about the same, but obviously a little better because of no restriction.

My car was 350whp and 380 tq. I end up selling it because all the fellow drivers were much older than I was and other than the car, no one really had the same interests that I had.

I sold the sky because it was too slow for my goals, and I wanted to build a different project.. build thread is here: Since the sky is gone, I need a new toy.

Mods on the car were listed in the youtube video description, but I copied and pasted them hear for you as well:

Saturn Sky Redline
2.0L Turbocharged

DDM 2871 Turbo, Tune, OCC, A-Pillar, Backbone and Probeam
Werks IC
Synapse Synchronic BOV
Dejon IC Pipes
Solo Hi Flow Cat & Street Race Exhaust
Glowshift Gauges
WR Windscreen & Door sills
HID Headlights & Angel Eyes

As far as a DD car, it worked great. I did enjoy driving it daily. Great mpg on the highway and easy to drive. Definitely far from "too radical to drive daily"

Does the stock catalyst stay?

Thanks for your answer.

Little confused on one point. Does the Solo Street Race system retain the stock catalyst? Or does it replace it with a straight pipe? What is the wider part I see on the front pipe?

Is it just a 'cat back' system?

Thx.

The CAT is not part of the exhaust as sold by Solo (or anyone else) It is a separate part directly upstream of the main system. I don't know of anyone selling other than a CAT back system. This would be apparent had you taken a look at Solo's pages.

Yes it will maintain the stock cat. I do strongly suggest that you change the cat at the same time you change your exhaust. It will allow you to reap the max performance gains from your new exhaust and the cat is believed to be the most restrictive part of our intake/exhaust system.

Still not sure

Maybe I'm slow, but it's not obvious to me. The first pipe shown, in their picture, has a bulge in it. What is this?

So, I should buy their low restriction catalyst too?

No sense getting their low restriction exhaust, if the catalyst is now the weakest link, right?

By the way, I don't actually need the catalyst as there is no smog inspection in my state.

Thx.
