Can you hear the turbo spool just by adding exhaust?

So when I added the magnaflo exhaust I got a distinct whistle sound when WFO and full boost...BUT...only with the Trifecta on. I turn the Trifecta tune off and I get nothing. While I was under the car installing the SOLO HF Cat I double checked for leaks at the clamps. No leaks. Now after installing the HF cat the whistle is even more pronounced. If I'm next to a curb or concrete barrier or another vehicle I can really hear it bouncing off the other object. So can adding a freer-flowing exhaust allow me to hear the turbo spool?

On a side note: After installing the cat I now only see 22 PSI on the DIC instead of 23???? I actually feel better about seeing 22 because I thought that perhaps the DIC would not indicate anything above 23. I was hoping I was not boosting above 23 and not be able to tell.

Joe, I think this is normal.

With my 4" Magnalfow exhaust and High Flow cat, I can hear a whistle of the turbo when driving too.

As far as boost levels, keep in mind that you now have a better flowing exhaust system. You should be getting more air into the engine even though you're running a slightly lower boost pressure because the flow is better.

Now granted, I'm a 2.4 and I have a very loud intake as well so my results may be a bit different than yours.

Whoops...typo. Should be 3".

Lord 3" is bad enough in clearing things. This is what happens when it is almost time to go home on a Monday, my brain is already half way to Lake Elsinore.

Yes, the same thing happened to me. The turbo is more audible after modifying my exhaust.

It's cool, don't get me wrong, it's just that I wasn't expecting it. I knew the intake would make it sing but I have the budget tune and was advised not to alter the intake tract to the turbo.

I also have the Trifecta budget tune and they told me if I modified ANYTHING the tune would not work properly so I took a hands off attitude toward it. Have you had any problems with the tune not working properly?? I really want to do some intake and exhaust work on it but I am afraid to touch anything for fear of screwing up the Trifecta.

I had read a couple of threads on the subject and those threads had some real-world confirmations that exhaust is okie dokie but intake (i.e. cold air, maybe charge tubes) was a no go.

EDIT: and no problems with mine so far.

I was the first Kappa tuned by Trifecta and I had discussions with Vince about what would or would not be accommodated with a basic canned tune. The exhaust isn't an issue (nor does it give you any additional power) except for the high flow CAT, which apparently will work fine with the tune but you can get a bit more out of it with some customization.

He also told me that the GMPP intake had no effect on the tune.

wspohn's experience sounds about right for a 2.0 Turbo Kappa.

That's good to know! I started to add something from one thread I had read about the intake side being altered but I couldn't find it and was not sure if it was the CAI or the charge tubes.

Intake will, however, affect the sound of your car. I have a custom CAI on my 2.4 and another club member has an Intake on his 2.0 that is no longer in production. Both cars have stock K04 turbos and their stock recirculating bypass valves but both cars sound like they have very loud Blow Off Valves on them. I attribute this increased sound to the CAIs.

I love my CAI... Even if it doesn't give me any more power, the sound it allows me to hear is worth every penny I spent on it...

I'm right there with you SKY Spy...I loved the sound it gave the 2.4 and when I went on a cruise with the local Kappa group, I loved the BOV sound of the turbo while we were running through the twisties!
