engine shake. what does it mean?

Guys, whenever I turn on my AC. It causes the engine to shake like if though the engine isn't bolted down and the belt make a weird noise. What does that mean? Should I bring it in for service? Any insight would be great!!! Thanks

Does your air blow cold? It could be a number of things but it sounds like either the compressor is failing or the compressor's clutch is failing. It sounds like the motor is shaking and your getting a strange sound because the compressor or clutch (most likely compressor) is jammed and fighting the belt trying to turn it.

Then it just may be the engine reacting to the load the AC system is putting on it. Hard to tell if the conditions you describe are excessive. The AC system puts a load on the engine and it will react to that load. From your initial post it sounded like the engine was shaking really bad but if the AC is blowing cold it may just be the normal shaking. Without seeing what's going on it's hard to say. It could be one of the engine mounts is blown or loose. Uncommon for sure but at this point I'm just throwing out ideas.

Does the engine jump when you shift from park to drive or reverse ?
You can have some record the actions of the engine when you do the shifting
Some times you can tell if the engine mounts are bad by doing this

And like others have said if it's not that sounds like the AC compressor/clutch

Thanks guys. Yeah, I think something is loose . haven't had time to take it to the shop. Just hope it doesn't die on me. How do I check the mount? Is it a bolt or something?

Mine shakes like crazy when I turn the AC on. These engines are extremely weak from a torque perspective. For the car to maintain the load at idle torque with all the normal bells and whistles pulling power, the engine works pretty hard. The drivetrain on these cars is pretty loose in that components bang around a lot. It doesn't appear to affect reliability, but it can be unsettling if you are used to a more refined driving experience.

The engine mounts are fluid filled rubber "feet" that large bolts hold to the frame of the car and the engine. If one of them is bad, the fluid can escape and "deflate" the mount so that the engine is essentially sitting on the frame. All of the above can seriously amplify the drivetrain noises. I have not heard a failed engine mount so I speak theoretically, but I can imagine how awful it would be considering how loud these cars are to ride in when functioning properly.

Have you had any unexplained small oil puddles near the car lately that you cleaned up and then saw no more of and thought nothing of it?

ArikDahn, it is uncommon to have an engine mount fail but they will fail over time...and our cars are starting to get up there in age.

I thought I heard of a couple people having the passenger side mount fail...but I could be mistaken.

Yeah me either but ya never know. One thing about cars is that no matter how rare an issue is, it could still happen.

No oil spill that I can recall. I'm the 4th owner. It's very reiable and I love it. I just want to maintain and keep it as long as possible. I was afraid that the shaking Will damage the engine.

No, they are on hydraulic engine mounts and a little shaking isn't going to hurt it.
