It's pretty easy to tell.

Pop your hood. Stand next to the front window on driver side and look down. See first figure below. The Red "1" is the line from the engine manifold where the brake vacuum is pulled. The Red "2" runs off to a vaccum pump and is connected to the main vacuum line via a T junction (red circle). If you have the T junction, you have a vacuum pump. If you don't have the T junction, then you don't have a vacuum pump.

Below is a pic of my car (2008 RL without a vacuum pump). Note the line runs from the engine manifold (red 1) to the brake vacuum cylinder (red 3) and there is no T junction connection or a a vacuum pump line.

When I was at MeccaII in Wilmington and got to look under the hood of their 2009 display car, I noted the configuration was similar to the one in the first figure above. The vacuum line has a T junction with the extra hose running off to, presumably, a vacuum pump. Hence, my conclusion that if the 2009 display car is representative of the production cars, the 2009 RL will have a vacuum pump.

And I know that GM has a retro fit for the 2008 RL because one of our 2008 RL owners in this forum had a major problem with vacuum during cruise and here is how it looked after Saturn got through with the fit. Note the new vacuum line and the T junction. They installed a vacuum pump. I personally talked to the Service Manager that managed the work and confirmed the fix indeed involved a vacuum pump installation. This is the only case I'm aware of where a vacuum pump was installed under the authority of corporate Saturn, and to the best of my knowledge there isn't any TSB on the street covering this update. Hence, it is not available in general and most Saturn dealerships will not be aware of it. You can ask, but don't expect them to be knowledgeable...unless....of course....they read these forums.

Bingo.

So, of those that have or were contacted NHTSA, any further contact or information from them?
