It's Summer...where's the stage 2

Just wondering if anyone has heard news of when the ECM reprogram from GM is going to happen.

I'm waiting on either Stage 2, BSR or GM. Whichever comes out first I'm getting.

Well, I'll be happy if the GM tune EVER happens.

Has GM ever released a performance-related re-tune for any of their cars?

I'd love for it to happen, but until we get some real official info, I'll remain doubtful.

Yup ... GM Tuner Source Blog — GM Tuner Source

Look under the accessories tab ... you'll find Stage I and Stage II kits for a few cars there!

Doubt away .... its gonna happen, they are running the Stage II already in the T2 Solstices.

BTW ..... you'd be surprised at the "official" info that is getting posted on both boards.

I guess that I'm just not seeing it on that site. There's lots of racing and tuning articles, but nothing about GM ever releasing a performance tune that keeps their warranty intact.

If so, what cars has GM done this for?

Corvette or GTO maybe?

Stage II Supercharger Upgrade Kit — GM Tuner Source

Now ... this is a Supercharger Stage II kit. Guess I see your point on the "tune" ...

That's right. Rub it in. Still no EO at CARB yet, with the reasonable assumption that one is required.

Sure there's lots of hardware upgrades around, even a CAI and exhaust for our cars. That's not the same as a software upgrade.

I'm not going to wager. If this does become available, I'll be among the first in line.

Here's the reason why I'm sceptical -- it looks like we're not getting a brake vacuum pump re-fit, even though we KNOW those exist, even though at least a few have been installed, even though there was an NHSTA investigation.

If GM/Saturn won't fix our faulty brakes, why would they be willing to re-tune our cars for better performance?

If there was an announcement from GM saying "Yes, it's coming.", I'd be much more inclined to believe. But at this point, if we didn't have members who happened to go on the plant tour, we wouldn't know anything about it.

It was also mentioned at SEMA ... that was the FIRST time we were told "yes, we have Stage II" ... we've talked about on the Solstice side for quite a while.

Yup, especially AFTER retuning and going faster, what good is the tune if I can't stop it? Sorry, I just had to post this thought..

Just found some new info

Quote:
I spoke with some test engineers, and development engineers on this very project in the past few weeks and was told that funding was cut after the May MECCA tour. Testing has not been completed, and is not scheduled for the 3rd quarter.
I sent an email for confirmation with my contacts too - just for validation.

This does not sound like the good news all the 2008 GXP/Redline owners were hoping for!

Also:
Quote:
And.. to add insult to injury... I recently learned that the BOSCH engineer who did the tune has left BOSCH and signed a non-compete clause to not do development on this or other projects they were involved with. Not sure who did the tune for the Cobalt / HHR though.. still working on tracking that information down.

Well, that sucks...but I'm not really surprised.

GM has a lot of bigger problems to worry about right now.

i don't get it. they're almost ready to release a product, already have plenty of time and money invested in it, and they just drop it? i know things are going badly for GM, but if they don't plan far ahead enough to ensure a relatively cheap tune does, it really doesn't bode well for the company as a whole. yeah i guess something like a tune would be really expendable when things come to the chopping block, but if it was that close to completion i'd try and get some money out of it.

I see this happen often when a company is in trouble. I was working pro bono on a development team for a commercial product (not automotive related) and had spent about two years with the company's salaried employees helping get the product ready. It was about 90% complete. Two years invested. It would have easily returned a profit to cover at least the final 10% needed to go into production. But the focus was on cutting costs NOW. The fact it would turn a profit in a year was not satisfactory.

It sounds like GM is in this mode. If it isn't turning a profit NOW, it gets cut. GM may not have the cash needed to pay its recurring obligations; the first pie to get thrown out is R&D.

Looking at the trends, I give it 50/50 as to whether GM goes Chapter 11 sometime over the next year.

Just want to not lose sight of all the stuff in play. Reported previously, the guy at Bosch heading up the work on the tune moved on. That's a big setback out of GM's control. Noted also was that the tune wasn't finished. It's not a simple matter of just tweaking a few things to make sure everythings working safe and sane, let alone bought off by GM. Don't think the aftermarket tunes didn't go through a ton of time and expense to hit the market. If this GMPP offering was going to be 50 state legal, as I assumed, there's a good chunk of time and expense getting through CARB as well. And yeah, ultimately it can't be a complete loss financially. Even in the best of economic times, these setbacks coulda put the project at risk.

I doubt that big time. It's easy to get dour with nothin but a stretch of bad news, but I'd bet a ton of big and small companies will hit BK well before the General. Tough times, absolutely.
