redline and 2.4 differences

I tried searching but im not coming up with it. i was hoping there was a sticky, but overall besides the motors what are the defining differences between the redlines and the 2.4s?

my goal is to get a RL and with the price drop that ive noticed my dreams are getting pretty close. the price on the 2.4s is so enticing though and considering what ive done with my 2.4 cobalt (turbocharged, suspension and exterior mods) i wouldnt mind getting a 2.4 sky and s/c ing it. so..could you guys help me out and pt me in the right direction or just list out the differences?

The redline has a dual outlet exhaust. The front parking light area is different. The redline has the redline logo on the seat and rear bumper. The fake side vents on the front fenders are painted silver pearl regardless of the color of the car. There may be more, but that's all I can think of for now. Depending on the price, a 2.4 with a DDM supercharger may be the way to go. Check the DDMworks.com website or call Dave for prices.

the real difference between the cars is that the 2.4 will not give u as many mechanical issues but the R/L is probably more fun to drive...also, the automatic has less issues as compared with the stick...

Exactly what are you basing THAT on?

The biggest (major) mechanical issue that the Sky has had has been the rear differential, and that was a problem with both models.

I haven't heard anything here that would indicate that either model is more reliable than the other...

i know about ddm that was the route i was considering, shoot even custom turbo..

do they both have the same type of clutch in them? (rl and 2.4)

I DEFINITELY want the stick version. my new DD will most likely be an auto.



do rl's have lsd or anything? oh!! do the rl's have different headlamps? i keep seeing pictures of skys and some have dark projectors and others dont.

Yes the RLs have dark headlamps, the base model has silver.

Also, the RL has a different (stiffer) suspension, and the instument gages are a bit different. The interior of the RL has different stitching also.

The (mostly early) rear differentials had a problem with gasket leaks and was eventually replaced with a different model.

The newer ones have had far less issues, but some people have still reported problems (on both the RLs and base models).

thank you.. that was a big question. i know i could probably buy the darker ones if i got a 2.4 but its no biggie really. if i do get a 2.4 im for sure upgrading it.

my intent is to just get the "top trim" and mod that. Doing a custom build from a base car is really time and finance consuming and i may save more in the long run just getting a RL

Biggest difference (besides the engine) is that the Redline has Electronic Stability Control. This can't be added to the 2.4L Sky.

Are you looking to purchase new or used?

Frankly, I'd take the time to save the extra $ and buy a Red Line straight up. Look for one that hasn't been modded yet and with some factory warranty left (if buying used) and see if you can get the Turbo Upgrade installed which keeps the warranty intact. You'll be more than happy.

i want a used sub 30k mileage car.. from what ive been seeing is 15-17k for 18-30k miles on 07s and 08 redlines..

im not really worried about warranty. my 06 cobalt has 37k on it and i boosted it at 24, painted it, dropped it, changed soooo much of the car already. my club president is a gm tech so he helps get things warrantied when necessary. even when the car's out of warranty range which is a plus.

if i get a a redline plans for it are paint, turbo, charge piping, and intercooler uprgrades and trifecta tuning. i dont want the gm stage kit. probably some new wheels, and a different exhaust, small audio and calling it a day.

if i got a 2.4 mods are the highest s/c setup and probably some internals and headwork similar to my cobalt. then wheels, paint and exhaust and small audio.

do they have roll bars for these cars?

I owned an early 2.4 for a few years and now own a RL. The 2.4 I modified a fair amount but the small numbers of our cars made a CA street legal SC setup not viable. The SC was my goal and mods objective.

The biggest differences IMO are between the early 2.4s and later 2.4s. The differential problems were solved long ago. I may have some of the details off here, but no doubt folks will fix me up. Early 2.4s had a different gear ratio. I found 2nd gear awkward, although a good chunk of power from a SC would I think mitigate that. Rear end ratios if I remember correctly were different between the 2.4 and 2.0 as well. The early 2.4s also do not have the drive line torque arm. Suspension is a big difference between the two. The 2.4s is softer, but easily changed. As noted early 2.4s lack TC/SC. Pros and cons there, but I found it a nice safety feature as once you build up a good power base, without it we get tail happy.

It's a tough call between the two models. They both have their charm but in different ways.

As far as roll bars.. no dice. They just won't go without _extensive_ tearing up of the car.
