Squealing tires

OK, so this is the first true Sports Car I've owned, but I've owned may others in the 36 years I've been driving. Most of them sticks, so I know how to drive a stick in my sleep.

I find it interesting that when starting into a turn from a dead stop (for instance at a light, where I'm first in line), even when I'm being "gentle," the rear tires will squeal it bit. (Not every time. Maybe 25% of the time.) I'm not trying to squeal them. But they do it anyway. This car really develops torque! (And no, I haven't disabled the limited slip differential, or put it in Competition Mode by mistake.)

Anyone else experience this?

Baron

You may have just mis-typed, but I think you really mean "disabled traction control" not "disabled the limited-slip differential". They aren't the same thing.

Remember that, especially in turns, your Limited Slip Differential will try to equalize the speed of both rear tires, hence the "squeal".

Ahhh... that's the reason. Thank you! By the way, I received the rear light blinker thingy, and it will be installed on Thursday. Thanks!

It actually increases the torque bias applied to the slower turning wheel (inside during turns). The two wheels are connected by gears without a clutch between the axles.

THINGY is probably the most technical of all terms, it is responsible for just about every invention or discovery since fire (not to mention the increase in population)

Grog: what that hot thingy over there?

Org: Me call it "fire" it's nice on cold dark time, but hurts to carry, need to make a thingy to move it to next cave...

and thus the saga of "THINGY" has been going ever since!

The Sky, my Sky at least, does not have a Torsen limited slip. It has the good old, garden variety, clutch pack limited slip which, as BA said, attempts to equalize the speeds of the rear wheels.

In addition to the squeal on dry pavement, it is responsible for much of the slipping and sliding that people complain about in the wet.

Yep, it happens to us too. Maybe even more than 25% of the time.

I find that I can squeal the tires in every gear, turning or not....

I just don't drive it like that.

I get the same chirp from the tires often...the clutch engagement is very tricky compared to my other sports car and then the LSD adds to chirp...I like it and get some funny looks from people for squeeling my tires...

"Torque sensing" does not necessarily mean "Torsen", and this would not be the first time that marketing information was not strictly technically correct.

The LSD fitted to the 07 NAs is a clutch-pack type according to the 06 Solstice service manual. I have not read anywhere that the RLs have a different design of LSD, and my 07 Sky service manual has not yet arrived from Helm.

Can someone with a service manual check the design of the LSD ?

Yea my car tires make alot of noise. I think the tires that come with the sky just suck! Ive had other sport cars and I could spin the tires and they never squeeled, you just heard the friction of the tire on the ground. I do drive a lilo fast and it sucks to have the tire noise since the cops will look at you more often cuase of your tires. Even when im not trying to drive fast mine still make noise so I understand your comment.

I also feel the stock tires suck. Everything I do makes them squeal. The road plays a big part in this. As soon as I drive out of NYC it's much better. As far as the tires thought they take too long to heat up.

Just purchased a Redline locally here in Orlando. New to the Saturn Sky , Traded an 05 Mini Cooper and while this car is primarily for the wife I still drive it some. The clutch engagement seems to engage about halfway up from the floor so it causes the wheel chirp. I know a new 5 speed takes some getting use to but is the engagement position adjustable by a dealer. It would seem to be much better if it were engaging closer to the floor. The vehicle is new with aprox 300 miles on it. Any ideas?
