Stack up against an LS1?
How would you guys say a Sky Redline with 280 to 290 whp against a 1983 Chevy Camaro with a stock to slightly modified LS1 in it would do? I'm not sure if the Camaro is a manual or Automatic. And of course this is a 1/4 mile race. None of that stupid street crap.

The LS1 depending on what year and modifications generates between 305-350 FWHp and in Calloway versions as much as 385 FWHp
The 83 Camaro was built with an L69 305CID 190 FWHp engine. Curb weight 3300 lbs. If the car truly has an LS1 you are severely overmached in torque and HP and barring any drivers mistakes will probably get stomped. If it has the original engine you will likely be the one doing the stomping.

If its an earlier engine you might have a pretty close match.

Having both a '98 Z28 convertible and a '08 Sky Redline, I think the Camaro will win by a substantial margin.

not so sure. At the track, I beat my friend in his GTO by a slim margin 13.51 vs. 13.54.....so if you have a kappa pushing 290 whp it's almost dead even.

Well, I had a 99 Z28 auto with a stock motor, exhaust, intake filter and a torque converter (stuff he will need for the conversion anyways) and it ran 12.2s at 111 mph. My stock 01 Trans Am WS6 6 speed trapped 109.46 mph on a crappy 13.43 with a 2.3 60'. It will really depend if he can get the car to hook.

The LS1's all mostly perform the same. A 98-02' Camaro Z28 actually dyno's at the same power as a C5 Corvette that is rated at 345hp/350hp.
Don't look at the marketing BS, try and find what people are actually putting down on the dyno for realistic comparisons. The Camaro's/TA's are a bit heaver than Vettes and less aerodynamic, so regardless of the power the Vette "may" be faster in longer races where top end power and aerodynamics come into play. With that said, you would find it difficult to beat any LS1 equipped vehicle with a 290rwhp Sky. I haven't run my C5 Vette yet at the track, but my buddy ran a 13.2 in a bone stock 00' Z28. He weighs ~200lbs more than me. Also, don't compare a GTO to a Vette or Camaro. They may have the same power or more, but they are substantially heavier and harder to get traction. Obviously none of this applies to the original poster's question since he was asking about a friend who is doing an LS1 transplant into an older car.

My C5 Vette put down 321rwhp (312rwhp SAE) bone stock. The LS1 is underrated, plain and simple. But yes, weight and driver will still most definitely be the determining factor. A Vette will still be a VERY tough target, as mine weighs 3179lbs. The Camaro/s TA's are a bit heavier.

![]() I have no idea on what the original poster asked though, I don't know anything about an 83' Camaro. What would the weight be on something like that?

First. Nick what have you all done to your Sky to get 290 WHP? That would be about 335-339 HP at the crank.
![]() Second if you read all the posts on this thread I think we are talking about wheel HP and also Crank HP and as we all know there is a big difference. ![]() Last edited by RickyD : 07-24-2008 at 09:27 PM. |

Curb weight of that '83 was like 3500 lbs stock. If you're really making 290 to the wheels, and he's got a bone stock LS1, you will probably pull him. If he's not stock in any way (lighter or more power) you're likely to lose. I'd love to see the race though. Last edited by fr0stb1t3 : 07-24-2008 at 09:57 PM. |

292 whp & 327lb ft to the wheels. I ran 13.5 with a comfortable launch. The car can run quicker, I just didn't feel like getting kicked out (nhra rules for convertibles.......boooo) There was another Redline, i forget who, who has a similar setup and power to me that put down a 13.0 with radials
