08 diy oil change 2.4

OK - did my first oil change on my 2008 sky and it went pretty well (resetting the dic was a snap). My question for anyone else out there that has done this themselves; What did you use on the nut for the oil filter? I had a 1 and a 1/4 socket, but it was too tall (a pipe in the way wouldn't let it sit down properly), so I took it to a bench grinder and basically cut away about an eighth of an inch, but I still did not like how it worked. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I use a short 1 1/4", 1/2" drive socket and a 6 inch extension. works great. Supprisingly my $50.00 Snap-On socket is too tall but I bought a cheap one at autozone of all places and it works like a champ! Also I found that buying the filter at the dealership is just as cheap as the auto parts chain stores and comes with a new cap and o-ring.

Same 1¼" short socket. I DID see in one store a special socket specifically for removing these type of caps, but did not buy one as they were $10 and I already had the shorty.

Short 1 1/4" 1/2" socket on a wobble extension. Wix filters only on my vehicles. Ray

Thanks forlks; I appreciate the input. Didn't realize that I could buy a socket that size that was a "shorty", was thinking I would probably wind up having to buy a boxed end wrench and cut it off or something. Sounds good.

Yup! That looks just like mine. I use it on my 2.2 Vue and my 2.4 Sky.

So, am I correct in thinking that this implies that the cap is plastic? I guess that would explain why they warn against using an open end wrench on it.

Yes, the cap is plastic. It does not need to by torqued down very tightly either, if you overtighten it you could brake the cap off from the threads leaving the threaded part in the filter housing. Just snugg it and check for leaks.
