Bigger Intercooler?

HI,

I don't have any engine modifications except a GM catback exhaust system w/ quad tips.

I was just wondering if getting a bigger intercooler will add hp since it's gonna help bring in more cold air?

do I need to dyno tune it?

thanks!

Yes, it will give you more power. An intercooler doesn't bring in cold air though, it's cools the air that is incredibly hot after the turbo.

No dyno tuning is necessary but to get the most from it you would want a "canned tune." The forum vendors each offer their own tune and they all seem to be pretty comparable to me. There is the BSR tune from Hahn, RPi has a tune, and there is the Westers tune from Dejon (I think).

I personally think I am going to go with the Hahn intercooler and tune, with an RPi exhaust, but I am not 100% yet.

I was reading the other threads, they say about 20-25 whp increase with the upgraded intercooler.

I am leaning towards Hahn intercooler.......almost twice cc compared to the stock. The biggest among other available brands.

what is a canned tune?

what is a canned tune?
A canned tune is one set-up for a specific model of car (Sky Redline in this case) but not for YOUR Sky Redline.

It's generally on the conservative side so it works with all of that specific model (all 2008 Sky Redline's). It does not take into account additional mods (usually) or any variables your car may have. It DOES help bring out the best of any mods you may have installed though.

Dyno tuning is pretty tough right now as we have very little control over the ECM. Until HP Tuners cracks it the canned tunes are generally the best way to go. The Hahn BSR tune is actually an entirely different OS for the ECM that (the rumor is) he paid around $10,000 for.

I think, for the meantime, I'll just go for the intercooler.

I just don't want to those electronic stuff......since after reading some threads, they have all these problems popping out.

It does happen with stuff this new. I figure I'll do the Hahn BSR because you can easily take it back off. Good luck with the IC and tell me how you like it!

I agree on the Hahn intercooler, but for the price of the BSR tune you can order a new ECM and have it flashed with the westers race (hot) tune. Then you can swap out ECM's if you need to go back to stock.

Dejon has the option to order a new ECM and have it set up with the westers tune. You tell them your mods and they make your custom tune and mail it to you installed on a new ECM for the same price as a BSR tune. In my opinion, your way better off with the westers tune, but some may disagree!

I agree but the problem I ran into was that Mr. Wester does not have out the tune yet for the 08's, and when I emailed them the response I got back was "No not yet..."!!!??? No explaination of about how much longer so I just went ahead and bought the Hahn IC and Hahn/BSR... MAX

It hovers around 21-23 psi, and i believe the first two gears can hit 7000rpm.

From what I have found those are about the same numbers you get with the Hahn/BSR tune and the Hahn also comes with Launch Control... MAX

I just received my Hahn/BSR on Tuesday and have it installed for my '08 RedLine. When you watch the boost move up to 24psi, you can definitely tell a difference in the seat judgement. I'm curious to see how it compares to the competition at the strip.

Good luck in getting any of the RPI crowd to post 1/4 mile results. I think they have too much power and are scared of the huge increase in customers.
