Doing it myself, LS2,3,7 swap!

Folks, i'm tired of searching for "kits" out there for our kappas, I don't want to pay some shop to do the work for me. The biggest joy out of tweaking a ride is getting dirty and torquing bolts. In this post I would like your support and knowledge in what is needed to make the conversion myself.

LS2 3 or 7 crate engine
LS ECU and wire harness
GM/Tremec T56 6spd transmission
custom manifolds and exhaust
???

First off, congrats on wanting to put a V8 in your Sky. As you can see I had mine done by Mallett and I love it.
I guess the first question is what is your ultimate goal here? Do you want to make your ride track worthy or like me just want V8 power and great sound? If itís for the track then by all means go with the big LS7. Just be aware that it will take a lot more then just an LS7 and a new Tremec T56 transmission. Besides a custom aluminum radiator (heat is a big problem) your going to need new a new drive shaft and stronger half shaves, modify the frame for engine fit, redo the suspension to balance the weight distribution, build a custom exhaust system and put some better and bigger tires on it. I donít race mine but it is awfully easy to break the tires loose with just the 368 rear wheel HP mine has.
Back in the old days, engine swapping was a piece of cake. We didnít have all that computer stuff to worry about. We put in a hot cam, multiple carbs, a dual point distributor, welded the spider gears together in the rear end if you didnít have positraction and off we went to the track.

track worthy, sure, not my main goal, power and sound, oh yea. I want to walk on boxsters, stangs, and vettes with a 400+ HP kappa. I know what you mean about swaps, dropping that 440 into my old 72 charger was a cakewalk. Like i said, I would really like the werks kit, but I want to do it, even if it only saves me a few bucks, the most joy i get is from self completion. My biggest batle right now is deciding which engine I really want, i mean, i'm not changing my mind once its in there. right now i'm stuck between doing the baddass LS7, or the "hot cammed" LS3

There is a forum that I go to that is all about Kappas with V8 power. Take a look. SolsticeLSX.com

Oh, this picture shows what I'm talking about in regards to frame modification for engine fit. It shows how Mallett put a notch in the frame for right side exhaust flange clearance.

correct me if I'm wrong, but i thought that mallett used the stock kappa 5speed in some of there "lower hp" cars, so if you go with a ls3 you might not need the t56

There is a guy on SolsticeLSX that got the LS3 and theT56. The LS2 is the only engine swap where you don't need the T56 upgrade.

Here's a good site to compare all the LS engines.

Gen III & Gen IV Vortec Truck Engines | GM High-Tech Performance Magazine Article at Automotive.com

I wonder if this would fit under the hood?

Go for the new 6060 tranny that is in the new Vette.

Unless the budget is huge I'd go for the older cheaper LS engine and put a squires rear twin turbo system in it.
