locked gas cap

I just bought a locked gas cap. I would not be comfortable having a car like this parked unattended without a locked gas cap. I don't want to cut the cord that attaches to the cap. I have done that in the past on other cars. My question is this: "Is it possible to remove the cord from the old unlocked gas cap and attach it to the new locked gas cap?"

Not that I recall...I also have the locking gas cap and I think along the same lines as u do...they r so malicious out there. Since we r on the topic of the gas tank area...when u open the lid to the gas, there is a small rubber tit that when u close the gas lid...it makes it line evenly with the car...that can come loose easily when pumping your gas...and locking the gas cap...I suggest u put some glue around it...otherwise it will cost u some money...they do not sell this one piece alone...u have to purchase the entire plastic lining ...I hope I have made myself understood..I suggest u take a look what I am referring to...it is a small item but should be watched carefully.

You don't have to cut the strap, it slips off and onto the locking one. It can be done!!!!!

Can the dealer order the whole rubber piece? Or would taking a chunk of rubber and wittling it down to size be cheaper and easier? Maybe a little piece of felt/cork/rubber the right thickness glued in place would work, hmm.
I don't see that the gas cover/lid does not line up correctly, but I do notice that metal click now when I close the cover, grrr.
Maybe we should do a poll on this little lost tit rubber piece that falls off of the car, I bet a lot of Sky owners don't even know its missing

gas cap

Ernest:

Would you be willing to describe how you got the cord off the unlocked gas cap and onto the locked gas cap. I also believe it can be done but am having difficulty. My hunch is that I need to put a screwdriver underneath the cord and try to sqeeze it out. I am not mechanically inclined and did not pursue this aggressively. Any tips would be much appreciated.

I just removed it from my non locking cap I used a letter opener and poped it off towards the exterior or top of cap I will be putting it on when I go to visit my baby in storage to put it on the locking cap. Dealer installed and gave me the original cap with the retainer still attached. Hope this helps Stretch.

Oh I noticed alrite, the whole gas cap/cover piece was replaced when the little rubber tab that supports the fuel door when closed broke off--The fix? They replace the whole thing--

I finally managed to pry the ring off my original gas cap but the its too big for the locking gas cap. Did I get the wrong part or something? Did anyone get this to work? What does the dealer do if you have them install it.

Being ignorant to the fact that it had an attached lead, I had the dealer install the locking gas cap before delivery. The first time I filled up, I thought how awkward it was not having any place to hang the cap. I just hold it till I'm through filling the tank. Next time I have service at the dealership, I am going to ask them to reattach the lead. How they will accommodate me!

My dealer put the locking cap on with NO attachement. I usually leave the key in the cap (my car key is on the same ring) on top of the pump.
Cannot leave without the car key so I will never forget the cap.

About how much did the locking gas cap run you from the dealership?

I bought mine from ebay. The seller was actually a dealer in Maine. It cost $15.95 plus shipping, I think. I got my splash guards there too to save on shipping. Haven't installed them yet. Hope it goes smoother then the gas cap.

has anyone discovered/created a locking billet fuel door? you know the ones everyone puts on their pickups and miatas these days? I like that look, and since my baby is all black, the billet would look superb, but i don't want it to be just a fake door, I want the real locking one.

I'm guessing that none of you have ever actually tried to siphon gas out of a Sky. I have and it doesn't work. There is a barrier in the filler tube that prevents you from getting a hose down to the fuel. Save your money.

I too leave the keys in the cap but I hang it from the hook thingy on the fuel door. Before I replaced my original gas cap with the locking one, you could drape the fuel cap attachnment cord over that hook.

I wasn't worried about someone taking gas out, but about someone putting something in the tank.

OK. But if someone is determined to mess with your car and they find the gas cap locked, I'm sure their ceative little mind with think of some other dastardly thing to do to.

I do the same. I bought my cap after I had the car for about 2 weeks. I just removed the strap....

Locking gas cap fix

I solved the problem of getting a strap to put on the locking gas cap but not by conventional means. First I tried to remove the original strap and put it on the locking cap. I got the strap off the original cap but was unable to get it on the locking cap.

So...I walked over to my wife's 2006 Yukon and looked at her strap. I thought to myself, this looks way more flexible than our strap so I took it off and it slid on the locking cap with no problems.

Well all was great until my wife filled up her Yukon and said, "wtf" happened to my strap?? So I had to go to the dealer and order her a new one, only here's the catch. You can't buy just the strap, you have to buy the entire gas cap which includes the strap (why didn't the locking cap come with a strap then??). The cost was around $22.

Maybe not the best means but it got the job done.

I always put my locking Gas cap on top of the pump while filling up,
this reminds me to get the printed reciept from the pump before
driving off.
