On the performance of the kappa

We hear a lot on these boards about our SKY performance (or lack thereof). We can get into a lot of technical discussions, kill stories, and back and forth on how the car performance. Lots of good stories. But there is one ultimate measuring stick. A stick that is hard to dispute, as it pretty much measures performance of peer vs peer, both in terms of vehicles as well as the drivers. It's the SCCA.

Granted, this is a SKY forum, but the basic underpinnings of the SKY and Solstice are the same...we're both kappa. And while there may be some nuainces as to the ability to use Solstice option suspension upgrades and keep a SKY in the same class, that is not really an issue when looking at raw performance.

Where am I headed? This is somewhat old news, but it's news worth repeating. Although we are still in the middle of the 2008 SCCA season, we can reflect back on the 2007 season and the NATIONAL T2 championships. Although drivers are part of the equation, it's still a driver/car combo. And in the 2007 championship run, the cars pretty much tell the story. Here are the mounts for the first, second, and third place winners:

1. Solstice.
2. Solstice.
3. Solstice.

So the next time you get crap about how a kappa handles...well, if SCCA is the measuring stick, it handles/drives better than everything else in its SCCA class. This isn't theory. It isn't tech jargon. It's cold hard fact.

The car is great in quick, spirited races... So it fits almost perfectly into Solo. Where I do not see the car performing is at Road Racing, or Drag Racing. I tend to like a car that can do all three forms, Drag, Road, and Solo...

When I test drove the SKY I would happily say it out handled my Z06, it's a great handling little car. So I would say if anybody says it doesn't handle well, I would call them uneducated.

Pardon my ignorance, if necessary, please, but isn't the SCCA championship referred to a multi-car race held on a road (vs. round/oval) course?

Yes, it was held at Heartland Park Topeka’s 2.5-mile road course. Multi-car. Here's a YouTube clip.
