RPI R1 tune installed on 07 auto RL

went down to RPI on friday and had my auto RL reflased with RPI's tune.

first one on automatic. eloy wanted to see if any problems arose with ECM communicating with auto's TCM. some fears it might go in limp mode.

RPI's tuner was there and he and dale did the reflash. they had absolutely no problems! after the reflash - dyno'd. about 30whp increase. (eloy has the scans and will posts - eloy?)

i believe they reworked the torque limiters, redline limiter and AFR tables.
(not sure if they redid the cooling fan tables - but it now runs cooler! (192-194 instead of 195-199!!)

having the torque limiters redone realy improves torque at low-end (1st-3rd gearing) and steady on the top end.. seems like it frees up and delivers torque VERY easily and quickly.

after i took it for a spin around the block i notice i was able to break the tires loose with trc/esc on and in 'd'. (before i had to turn off trc/esc (comp mode) and use 'l' or 'i' on the tranny.)

feels like another car - havent had at wot yet. but car feels like it lifts up for takeoff when boost is applied!!!

alittle more scarier when boosting at 80mph since now i get to > 100mph in nothing.

will need stickier tires soon since it's too way to easy to break looose.

love it! and car is running better (and cooler) than before.

eloy - thanks - well worth it!!!!

later
dan

p.s. i have a new 07 RL ECM i was going to use - might sell. (got it off GMparts.com for $380.) decided not to go through the hassle.

What does RPI use to tune? Are they using HPTuners or something else?

Price of the R1 tune is $675.

I've been talking to Eloy about doing this to mine as well and he mentioned the issues with the TCM. Have you still had clean running? If so, I'm sold.

I would be very interested in this also if it continues to prove that there are no issues with it being applied to a Sky equipped with an auto

scvanguard

put over 200 miles since friday. still runs nice - no issues what so ever.

(been having some fun!)

the tuner also upped the boost limit. he said it'll reach 20-21psi. but i've only had it up to 18psi so far. (before i've only seen max 16psi and at >100mph that's was plenty.) i've notice that it reaches 18psi alot faster and easier - so i'm alittle surprised at that.

very nice tune. still runs about 189-194 along long drives - which is nice.

engine seems to be running the best its been. removing those torque limiters really makes a difference.

BTW: would be nice if someone could setup a 'RL tune shootout'!
nationals maybe??

(like the old TCP shootout for the ARPAnet. see who has the fastest TCP implementation.)

would be nice to see BSR/Wester/RPI and GM (probably out be then??) comparison. either dynos and/or runs. (now we can do manuals and even autos!!)

i think all the tunes out there tweak about the same parameters/tables. (i thought some were not cracked yet - like the rpm limit. but i can now rev my auto >4k rpm in park!!)

i'll put some more miles on this week. i want to check gas milage also. since the AFR tables were tweaked, it might improve mpg??

later

Very interesting info moline. Thanks for sharing. One think I can add for folks is that Eloy is very conservative. He won't go for anything risky or that he's not comfortable with when it comes to engine longevity. Numbers? Just that. He'll look at the whole driving experience. Keep us posted with your driving impressions. I suspect you'll find more to your tune than just raw high end numbers.

So, what method does he use? The reason I ask is different methods have different parameters they can adjust.

kendall

sorry i was hoping eloy would reply. (he'll probably do it when back in the office on modany.)

all i know is that it's done via a laptop. i forgot the tuner's company name but i'm not sure eloy wants to share.

they did save my original flash and i can revert back anytime i want to.

best to talk to eloy.

30 Extra HP is nice and would be fun. My only concern would be, how your able to break the tires loose with traction control on, that should not be able to happen. Great while it is off, but does it bypass the traction programming??? Kind of pointless to have traction control that allows the wheels to break loose.
I would expect to have to turn that off, in order to let her out.

i should have said 'trying' to break loose. from a stand still there's that little hestitation when the hp gets to the tires that it feels like it break. no spiinging or smoke. (happens when trc is on - alittle scary when trc/esc off!)

but now it feels like i holding onto the steering wheel for dear life!

great upgrade.

p.s. eloy - please fill us in on the particulars (and i'm sure incomplete knowledge i've been giving!)

We dont use HPT or any other program that is available on the market. We worked with Powerchip in cracking the ECU. The tunes are NOT done with the OBDII port and we actually re-write the ECU. This makes it untracable by your dealership.

Two totally different types of tunes. We are running faily low boost compared to the BSR tune and its designed to work with other RPi mods.

Im sure Dan will keep us updated. I dont think we'll have a problem. We had a problem when we tuned with HP Tuners but the problems were evident the first time we took the car out for a test drive. As soon as we got on the freeway, the TCM/ECM freaked and the car would go into limp mode.

Check your local performance/speed shop (speed shop, not light bulb, body kit and hot air intake shop) or visit our website for nearest dealer ( RPi - Race Precision, Inc. )

Sounds stunning. 30whp that's a big increase!!! Impressive that you totally re-write the ECU.

About the TC thing. My bro's 01 Z28 only chrips going into second with it on. It's got something to do with the timing tables I think. I had a mess up timing table in my SS and that thing would hold a 1-2 shift for so long like it was pulling out timing that when it did shift it would go sideways.

Dealership ECM reflashes

Hi Eloy and all. I just had to have my 2007 RL ECM reflashed with an update because of a "Service ESC" idiot light. How would this have interact3ed with your tune and re-program of the stock ECM?

I will have an opportunity to remove the ECM in the near future (vacation out of the country) for a period of time when I will not be driving my toy and would like to send it to you!

Hi Clif,

Im not sure how extensive the reflash from the dealership is but we will certainly take care of it if any of our information was wiped out.

I know that you would have! However, you misunderstood my question. Would your re-written info have either interfered with the stock ECM reflash or been detectable in the process. Also, if there was a reflash by a dealer, would your re-re-tune take into consideration the GM correction of the ESC problem?

I cant say for sure if their reflash would affect our tune. If for any reason it did, we can always make a back up copy of you
