I think it was Jerry Rubin who stated it although it was sometimes credited to Abbie Hoffman when they were hanging around together as social activists in the 60's
I had to get my entertainment listening to radio shows. Didn't get our first TV until 1947 and there were not many channels or shows to watch back then.

I was stationed at Oakland Army Terminal in 1965-67...Of course we are talking about the 50s but since Abbie Hoffman & Jerry Rubin's names were brought up...I remember when Lindsey was Mayor of NYC and Mark Rudd started the riots at Columbia..coining the phrase Fun City....and Timothy Leary at Berkely...smoke Banana Peel, and people did it thinking they would get high...LOL
