Delaware water gap & Worthington State Forest

Last weekend I was down in NJ visiting family.
I had wanted to get out to the July 22nd run to Montauk Point, but with these plans already in motion that was not to be.

Well Saturday at 7am I woke up and, while everyone else was sleeping, I felt a strong urge to go for a ride ...
I went out to the delaware water gap and followed a road I discovered a long time ago - "Old Mine Road".
This road follows the Delaware River from the Water Gap on Rt 80 (last exit before PA) and runs along the general course of the river for almost 20 miles.

At the very begining of the road there is a single lane area where the roadway had been undercut by the river.
The solution to reopen the road was to make that section one way - at a time, controlled by a timed light.

So it starts out near the exit at the entrance to Worthington State Forest:

Then you proceed through the one lane section - this is short, but very narrow, dark and cool...

And this is followed by a long, long narrow twisty...

I took some pictures as I went, but the cell phone camera did not do the route as much justice as my GPS did!

While I arrived at the Gap following the highway, I set the GPS for "get me home, avoid all highways" and as you can see by the estimated arrival time (lower left - remember I left home @7am) I had a great ride home that morning!

So much to see here

There is some really very beautiful country and sights along this road, along with the hiking trails in the back country, camping in the state forest and Van Campen's glen where there is a beautiful waterfall that I used to swim in back when I first discovered this place.

All in all a highly recommended ride!

I hope this inspires some folks to head out this way!
Enjoy!

This is right in my backyard!
I hope to plan a run here some day soon. Maybe in September? I just haven't had any free time to organize anything.

I'll be back in the area around the 20th of Aug...
