The Mid-Atlantic Group... EOY 2006 Primer

So it turns out that new RL owner, Bella Sky, lives about a mile from me in South Jersey. She makes only the third sky I know of in the camden county, gloucester county NJ area (not that there arent more). And she is the only other RL driving the roads in my area.

So she asked me about the group... and what we've been up to... and i started to type a sky and NorthEast cruising primer, and thought i'd share an slightly edited version with everyone...
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
bella sky: What a small world....... That's Me... What kind of things do the groups around us do?

I cant beleive you just ordered in Sept and have already. i follow these boards regularly, and there are a lot of people who have ordered since early summer and dont ahve thier cars. There are people waiting on base skys since spring!!!

Groups? More like group.... and an extended family at that!
First...Just by owning a sky, you are in an elite group! Seriously, the car is new just this year, and is being built in small numbers. Mazda Miata makes in a month the same number of skys being built in a year! For several years this car will still be unique on the road.
In our immediate area... I know of a a guy working at xxxxxx that has a base sky (he doesnt have a computer, so hasnt been in any runs). i stopped in an talked to him. There is me in xxxxxx (I think just a mile from you). And you. That makes 3. End. I'm sure there are more, but I havent met them yet, and truthfully except for the group runs i may have only seen 3 or 4 skys on the road, and havent come across one yet while in my sky.

I give ya that background... to explain that its just one group for the area that is getting together, and we are pulling people from a 100 mile radius of Philly. There just arent enough skys on the road yet! But thats a good thing cause it keeps the car unique. And you and I really are centrally located to the group.

Yes we have been getting a decent number of cars out (compared to what i see on the boards regarding other parts of the country), but some people are driving 2 hours to get there! We really are a cross section of locales and ages. A few from Delaware. A few from Pennsy (philly, havertown). A few from North Jersey. Even Maryland. We also have a few in each age group... 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s ect... Truthfully, most cars at the runs are owned by guys. Chillpepper is a gal. The guys do bring along girlfriends/spouses. I haven't gotten my wife to go along yet! in all the group is a great group of people.

Despite our success at getting people out, the group is actually loosely defined and the cruises just come about from message board posts and sugestions. The get togethers have been revolving around getting out and going on cruises along interesting roads.... with the tops down of course. Things really picked up the last two months of 06 when RLs started shipping and we kept getting these perfectly timed warm weekend blasts!! The RLs didnt have all summer to drive with the top down so I think we are a little more eager to drop the top. Three times we've said "Hey its gonna be in the 50s this weekend for the last time this year, lets get together for the last cruise!". (Even this past weekend was great weather for convertible cruising, but we didnt have a cruise). Most of the cruises have been on Pennsy & Delaware side, as there are some great twisty roads in the suburbs. The general theme is, go for cruise and at the end stop at a restaraunt for something to eat. One cruise was 3 hours long, another was an hour. Western PA suburbs twice (manayunk, Art Musuem, Kennet Square). New Hope. Delaware (the wilmington plant). Rehobeth beach De.

Even in the 50s, with the windows up and low heat on, its comfortable driving with the top down. I am hoping that it doesnt rain during the eagles game this sunday as its gonna be 53 and I may cruise over to the stadiums with the top down. :-)

For next year.. I think we will be even more organized. We'll have the winter to work that out. Someone suggested the Brandywine Wine Trail next year... http://www.bvwinetrail.com/winetrail.html An Atlantic City/Cape May cruise is suggested (and my dealer is willing to sponsor it as an event starting at his dealership... turnersville saturn - prob your dealer also?). Solstice has a larger group (more cars being made, and out longer) and I think we'll start seeing more crossover.. Kappa Kruises. Also, Adelphia's in Deptford has a corvette car show during warm months the first Saturday of each month... it seems to have evolved into a GM show, and I stopped there last year and saw a sky there. Its a nice set-up as they have servers come out to the parking lot show area and take drink orders... so I hope to bring some fellow sky folk along.

Welcome to the club of sky owners!! You are gonna love this car!!! The Redline is AWESOME! I am beating the hell out of mine. :-)

Just follow along on the message boards and come along for the next cruise. Maybe we'll catch each other out on the road, ya cant miss my yellow sky!

We just got our RL on 12/15 and I have been reading the posts since about the beginning of november. I dont post much but love to read everyones posts. I look forward to the spring (or any weekend over 50) to cruise with you guys. I saw the pictures and posts from the kappa plant cruise in december and am looking forward to cruising with all of you guys in the future.
Dont ask why I am typing all this, I just reread it and it sounds very corny but what the hell, i figured I would post to let everone know that we (my wife and I) are eagerly awaiting the next cruise.

Marlboromike, we are the same age...29 (with 12 years experience)

I agree it sounds like alot of fun. I am still getting used to cruising around this site so if a run is coming up I might miss it. Point me in the right direction through a PM if you don't mind.

Thanks

There's also a link to it in the red bar at the top of every page, just to the left of the search button. I usually use that instead since it's always there.

Ask Mrs. Sky if Bella can come out and play. I suggested the wine trail and think you all will genuinely enjoy it. Just don't do it on an empty stomach as my wife did Good thing I was driving or we would have been run off the road by some Amish buggies. Still hoping to get together in the next couple of months. Car is in the shop as they continue, try #3?, to fix the roof issue. Great dealer though, so I don't sweat it too much.
