You do not have to talk on it unless there is a problem.... Most of the use of radios are for the lead cars and sweepers but the cars inbetween need to know if there are problems. This is for everyones safety. At the Dragon, Semi's cut the road very badly and with a radio if you are in the middle of the pack or the back of the pack you would get the most updated information from the lead car. Radios are a must on roads such as this and also 555 in Ohio with the blind hills with curves... Again just because you have one you do not have to talk on it..... but it is needed to listen to......

When I lead I like to state if I am turning or if there is a stop for some reason.... This is so the people who are driving solo dont have to take their eyes off the road..... I also like to know when everyone is through a stop.... So there are various reasons to have one.
Thanks for elaborating, Kim!

May I piggyback on this please

If you don't already own....buy a set with headphones
(some have vox..bu they are basically useless with the top down)
earphones let you hear things CLEARLY whereas if the radio is on your seat or in your lap what you hear may be garbled a bit and you may have to ask for a repeat.

Also...the main use is informational although there are "some" people who feel the need to keep up a running dialogue about bunnies or BVD fluff ...or squirrels or crabapples or COWS. This CAN (not always ) take away from crucial instructions....so we "try" to keep the banter to a minimum.

For those wondering, we will once agian have fees. Right now we are waiting on figures for meals and shirts. Once we get those nailed down we'll broadcast the fee amount. Also starting this year we will be offering payment via Paypal...

I guess we're a definite now. We decided to do this event instead of going to Aruba for our second vacation of 2009. It's cheaper.

Anybody know how long the drive is from Gatlinburg to Fontana Village?

This is what maps.google says...

Driving directions to Gatlinburg, TN
67.5 mi – about 1 hour 54 mins

It may change slightly once you put in a specific street address.

It's probably about an hour to 2 hours depending on traffic, route you take, and whether you want to test the THP. I have tested and won on occasion, but lost this past year.

Got your registration. Welcome to the party and see you in August!

Nice choice of the Smokies over Aruba, BTW. I'm an Alabamian so you'll understand me when I say I doubt you'll have a local drug you, use you for their jollies and then throw you in the ocean!

I was in the Smokies back in 1964 I think. I was in 4th grade and we did a bus tour to Gatlinburg and Clingman Dome from Parkersburg WV. Looking at the Clingman Dome website pictures I have to say it hasn't changed much since I was there. I know it's been awhile since I've been back to that area but I think we're really going to enjoy this adventure.

International Appeal

The reputation of the Dragon as being one of the ultimate sportscar and motorcycle roads is not confined to North America alone. Thanks to the World Wide Web, the experience of the Tail of the Dragon draws Sports Car and motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world.

Case in point, compliments of the weekly blog from our friend, killboy:

killboy.com: All the Way from ... Europe??

Follow the links in the comments of of that picture. That MINI had just previously been turning hot laps on the 'Ring!!! ( the Nürburgring ,for those not in the now, one of the most if not most acclaimed tracks in all of Europe)

It is not unheard of for such drivers who take in the tracks of Europe , the Autobahn and the Alps, transport their exotic beauties and supercars across the sea to come face to face wiht the Tail of the Dragon!!

Totd 2009

Hey guys, been down with a crashed computer but am now sporting a new laptop that allows me to keep up with whats been going on in the forum. Glad to see that we have a date set for next years event and you can count on us being there again. It's a great get away and we are looking forward to seeing more of the great folks we met this year. Guess now I need to get the registration filled out and see what room I can get reserved at Fontana Lodge, hope all the good ones aren't taken.
