Dragon Event -- Devil's Triangle Run

OK, Here's the Run #2 planned for Friday June 27th.

Appygirl will be leading a run up northwest of Knoxville and Oak Ridge known to local motorcycle enthusiasts as the Devils Triangle. It's a loop formed by TN Hwys 62, 330, and 116. Runs near Oak Ridge TN and Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary. It's a very isolated area with very challenging twisties more challenging than the Dragon.

Here is the write up by Ron and Nancy Johnson of TOTD.com about their trip there last year.

Tail of the Dragon.com -- Devils Triangle

Their pics show some WICKED turns!!

Here's a plot on Google Maps of their route out of Lenoir City, TN :Google Maps

I too agree this road is more challenging than the Dragon. We did a run here in March. Have fun and be careful.

Thanks for the insight, Sunset! Whoever goes on this run will be in good hands with Appygirl leading them!

Are the two runs on Friday going to be at the same time or will one be in the morning and the other one in the afternoon?

The Blue Ridge run will leave in the morning around 8:30 - 9:00. This run is up to Toni. She'll give me the details when she gets back from her motorcycle jaunt to the area.

OK- Hi All- I am back from my annual motorcycle adventure to the Smokies and Deals Gap. Sorry if this post will be a bit long, but I want to be sure to cover everything.

For starters, I did get a chance to run the Devil's Triangle. Thanks for the earlier advice about running it counter-clockwise. The pavement is truly much better this direction.

Summary- the Triangle overall did not appear to be more technical than the Dragon, in my opinion. There are 3 switchbacks which were not marked at all- signs appeared to have been layed over-NICE!! warning. NOT!!! The switchbacks are very technical, especially on a motorcycle. Other than that, most of the run appeared to be about like the Dragon, but with interspersions of open road giving a nice break. The end of the run- going counter-clockwise-hit 116 and a section that was freshly paved. I honestly thought at that moment, that I had been transported into the Gap. It was so similar. The scenery was very nice. There is a section where you can see huge windmills up on the mountains, and you see a lot of local culture and living. The oldest Confederate flag had been replaced with a fresh new one. I have attached pics of the windmills and a beautiful field with horses frolicking in it. I unfortunately did not get a pic of Brushy Mountain State Pen. All I can say, is that I will get one on the Sky run. It is gorgeous. It looks like a castle tucked into the backside of a mountain and surrounded on 2 other sides by mountains. Hard to believe it is a prison. A local told me it will be shutting down in the future as a new prison has been built. Here's hoping that they keep this prison for a sightseeing opportunity as it is really pretty. Martin Luther King's assissin was imprisoned here. He escaped for 3 days before being recaptured. Also famous to this area is the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This is the area where the plutonium/uranium came from for the Manhattan Project. There are many roads marked off as Y-12- gov't and guarded. When we started off the run in Oliver Springs, TN, a local woman came up to me and asked where I was from. I said, "IL." She replied, "I KNEW'S YOU WAS A YANKEE!" Then she asked where we were riding and told me to have fun. She thought it was nice that I had my own motorcycle, being a girl and all.

I have quite a run lined up. If I only just have the one car on this run. That's fine with me. We will have a blast. I will say for those trying to decide yet which run they would like to go on, that if you want to see beautiful open vistas and waterfalls, then the Blue Ridge Pkwy run is the way to go, but if you want to see a variety of twisty roads, historic locations, and local culture, and an occasional vista, then this run is for you.

I plan on leaving no later than 9AM, so that we can be back in time for the Dam Picture and to get cleaned up for that if necessary. The route will be as follows: Leave Fontana Village heading down Rt 28 to the Crossroads. Hit 129 and proceed through Deal's Gap. Turn right onto the Foothills Pkwy (you will get to see this in the daylight as we have an evening run on Sat.). At bottom of Foothills Pkwy turn left onto Rt 321 heading into Maryville. We will continue on 321 going on thru Lenoir City, TN (really neat bridge/dam here). 321 ends and proceeds into Rt 95. Take 95 until it splits and take 58 heading towards Kingston, TN. Stay on Rt 58 for like 1-2 miles and turn right onto Rt 327. 327 T's into Rt 61. Take a right onto Rt 61 heading into Oliver Springs, TN. We will run the Devil's Triangle in reverse starting at Rt 330 in Oliver Springs. Take 330 until you see the turn off for Rt 116. Turn left onto 116 and stay on it for the majority of the run. 116 circles round and ends at Rt 62. At Rt 62 take a left and head back into Oliver Springs, TN. At Rt 61 take a right heading back the way we came. You will need to be looking for Rt 327 and take a left onto it. Take 327 back to Rt 58. Take a left at 58. Go 1-2 miles and pick up Rt 95- exit to the right. Take 95 until it becomes Rt 321. Take that back on thru Lenoir City. This time we will not go all the way back into Maryville. We will take 321 until we see signage to pick up Rt 95 again. It will be on your right. We will take Rt 95 south thru Greenback, TN until it T's at Rt 411. Turn right heading towards Vonore, TN. At Rt 72 take a left. 72 runs and T's into Rt 129. Here we can stop and check out the Dragonslayer Pitstop on the very tail of the Dragon, and then run up 129 back thru Deal's Gap and down 28 back to Fontana. This may seem like a complicated route. Trust me it is not. Just print this off to use as a guide. I plan to also have maps available for those running, if we start getting up in numbers attending run. There is a Sonic in Lenoir City that we can use for lunch and snacking point thru-out day. I am excited!!!!

Devil's Triangle

Hey Appygirl, glad I was first to sign up, just a little suprised others haven't yet. After viewing the links that was provided I am convinced my suspicions were correct in that this route was designed by a higher power especially for Roadsters. Yeah sure. . . bikers have been enjoying it for years, but the higher power knew that one day there would be an American made roadster that would have owners flocking to the place.

Just for the record SolsticeWolf & Appygirl my handle is just Cajun Sky , the Turbo came from my attempt to identify which Sky I was a proud owner of and somehow got tagged to my fourm ID.

But anyway can't wait for next month to finally get here. . See Ya'll in the Mountians. .

Cajun Sky- glad to see you have not gotten scared and backed out. I am surprised, too, that you are the only car that has signed up, but honestly if it is just us, we will have more fun. We won't have to worry about losing others , and we can adjust the drive on the spot, if we so choose.

Last year, I offered to take others around on Friday on some scenic roads. I only had one car sign up, and we had an absolute blast. Ended up we drove the same way and were interested in the same things, so we spent most of the trip hanging out together. It was Solful. He and his wife were really cool. From Canada.

God definitely made the area around Fontana a paradise for motorcycles and roadsters. Everytime I go down there my blood pressure drops like 50%. I am so relaxed. Everyone is happy and laid back. I want to live in the south when I retire.

Count me in for this one. I was undecided between this one and the blue ridge run. I had initially thought about doing blue ridge because my gf was going to join me and she's more into the scenic stuff but turns out she can't make it so I'm going solo and I like the more adventurous driving. I may end up doing blue ridge on my own on my way out on Sunday.

Glad to have you LostCause. We are now up to 3 Skys and 2 Sols=5 cars. That's still a nice number. Not too big, not too small.

I will be bringing a set of radios. I am going to give one radio to the last car in our group. My rules for everyone are going to be real clear. Pay attention to the car behind you. If everyone looks out for the car behind them, then we should never have anyone getting left behind and lost. This is how we operate when we go on large group runs with our motorcycles, and we have never had a problem. In addition, if lead and last car have radios, this helps, too. I like to keep a peppy pace. That morning when we all meet up, we can divide down based on driving style and what each hopes to get out of the run. That way no one will be unhappy.

Appygirl, I did not realize that the Blue Ridge Run and the Devils Triangle Run were both going to start at the same time. Obviously we cannot do both so we will have to do just the Blue Ridge Run so that we can see the bridal falls. I hope I did not cause you any headaches or too much confusion and again thank you so much for everything you are doing.
