August 8-10 Weekend -- Route 66 Directions (Downloadable)

I have the route figured -- looks good. I will print detailed directions and have copies available at the run and available for download, soon.

The starting point so far appears to be at Father Pierre Marquette Portage Park. If you go to Google Maps and find the Rt43 (Harlem Ave) Exit (north) from I-55 in satellite view you'll see a round park area to the west of Harlem (Great lot). This will accommodate many cars. One problem..... You have to cross Harlem (No signal) to get back northbound (we have to go north). So two solutions -- since it will be 10 am on a Sunday -- perhaps traffic won't be too bad -- OR to the right (east) there is a large trucking parking lot just before we get to the really nice park. So we have Nice park -- bad road access or: Wonderful traffic access sucky parking... Any comments?? Oh we turn from Harlem soon after the park....
Beyond that it is clear sailing -- for some of the Chicago section we will be on I-55 --- BUT we will head south on 53-66 through Joliet and environs, once at Wilmington we will see sections of original pavement and some new sights as well a old landmarks as we go further south...

Finally -- if you plan on joining us to Pontiac.... Let me know here so I can plan... TY!!

Thanks for the info Rick!

We have some people who have been checking in on the Sol forum and the attendance thread. I can tally up the numbers when I get back from Ohio Sunday!!

Looks like we'll have a decent sized group running Route 66. The total attendance tally is up to 26 Kappas. I'd say at least 15 will run Route 66.

The Route looks awesome, Rick. Thanks so much for the write up. I enjoyed reading it.

Had fun mapping it out too. Enjoy! Can't wait for next weekend!

Actually --- I was able to get all the way to I-55 and Joliet Rd (just past the tollway interchange -- so the turn off at Rt45 is not done... Unfortunately -- found this AFTER I printed directions --- I will try to make an addendum to the printed versions...

I have a very limited set (15 I think) printed in full color and staple bound - I did them in large type for ease of reading while moving. I try to set Sites, Sights and Places off so they stand out -- there are soooooooooo many subtle things along the way Rt66 this and Rt66 That -- It's fun to try and see them all!
We will stay on 66 longer than I have in that book as the section from Route 45 to I-55 is to be added -- but I will try to print a small addendum to add to the book -- I am NOT gonna re do them LOL!!!
I will have the printed ones with me Friday -- but I ask that only those who are going to go ask for them because of the limited supply (I ate up a whole ink cart on my printer!!!) But the Logo is SO great

Quite a few being? -----

Note for all coming:
If you do print out the copy -- it is set to print landscape. I put a big gutter on the left side and stapled them along that gutter. Makes for a bigger area to see - so I could print with large type. Also I tried to column-ize so the info for segment would be on one page.....
So anyone thinking of going -- try to print it out yourself. I see the map that Awesome Sky did is FANTASTIC..... One might want to print that as well (just re-do the section from rt45 to i55... )

Hold on and I'll print the list from the Sol forum. I'll need to link this thread over there as well so people can get to this doc.

Here's a revised map... I also have a chart of the Lat/Long for each of the items/POIs in your book, Rick. I'll post those later tonight for anyone who might want to program them into their GPS devices.

Revised Rt 66 Cruise Map

Hey Rick...

I'm trying to make copies of directions for everyone for the weekend. Hotel to dinner, Hotel to dealer, Hotel to Car Show...etc.

What do you think is the best way from the hotel (Higgins & Cumberland) to I-55 and Harlem. Take Higgins to Harlem? I'm thinking that's better than parading everyone through the tolls on 294.

Any idea on a timetable for Sunday?

I absolutely, positively, 100% need to be home by 4:00 for another commitment, and I want to drive with the group as far as possible before bailing.

You should make it. We'll meet at Harlem and I-55 at 10:00 am. You might not be able to have lunch in Pontiac, but you'll make it home by 4:00 for sure.
