Autocross @ Mather Field [SCCA Solo 2] (Sacramento, CA) May 17 & 18

I originally posted this over in the Solstice forum, and figured I really ought to share it here too... I know there are some conflicts for a few people, some are going on a NorCal run on Saturday... Anyone is welcome to come either day, Saturday or Sunday, both are separate events, so you don't have to do both unless you get totally addicted like me

I just took the GXP to my first autocross this past weekend in Stockton and had an absolute blast! The organizers and other competitors were really great (even the Miata drivers ). Everybody was really helpful and friendly, which was great for me since this was my first time racing. I was the only Solstice there... hopefully some more of you Solstice owners will come out and represent this next time.

For those of you that don't know what autocross is...
A timed run around a coned off course (at Stockton it was in a parking lot at the fairgrounds, took about 30-40 sec. per run, Mather should be about 1 min. per run).

You race the clock, so no wheel to wheel racing, usually two cars end up on the track at once (1 starts as the other is about 1/2 way done).

The only real danger of hitting anything is cones (I hit two during the fun runs, no damage to the car).

You will get 4 runs with your entry fee to try to get your best time. For morning run groups there are fun runs ($1/ea) before the lunch time break, afternoon run groups (and morning groups if they stay) get fun runs at the end. (I ended up doing a total of about 30 fun runs plus my 8 timed runs during the two events on Sat and Sun). You are expected to work the course (usually resetting cones) for one run group.

You can race your car how it is, and loaner helmets/numbers are available at no extra charge. I ran my GXP on the stock wheels/tires from the factory. The only performance mod I have is a K&N air filter. For this next round I'm hoping to have a new exhaust and the alignment done. If you're really competitive and wondering how you might do... it was my first time and on Saturday I was about 5-6 seconds behind seasoned drivers in Corvettes (A-Stock) with racing tires (and I was on street tires). Sunday I switched to the street tire class (no results yet) and finished a tenth or two ahead of a Corvette driver on street tires that I talked to afterwards.

It would be great to see some other Kappas out there this next time, so if you're in the area and your right foot is feeling heavy, come check it out, it's about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on!

If you have any questions please feel free to ask, I'll try to find an answer or at least ask someone who knows... I'm easier to reach on the Solstice forum, but check in here from time to time. Hope to see you and your Kappa there!

I'm also trying to organize a group discount for Kappa owners (minus myself) interested in trying autocrossing, for Round 6 on Sunday May 18... if you're interested, please sign up on the Solstice Forum, or at least post below and I'll add you to the list.

Also, if you're interested in checking it out, but not racing, there is no charge for spectators!

Thanks,
Myke
