CA/NV/AZ Route 66 Fun Run - 800 Cars - May 2-4 - Seligman to Toprock

It's official! We now will have at least a half dozen cars at this event (and growing). Some are staying in the area after nationals, and others are coming back for this event, and still others are people who could not make it to nationals. Here are the details:

Phoenix Meetup: People in Phoenix will be meeting at 4:00 PM on Friday, and others will be driving up Saturday morning. For more info, visit Phoenix Pontiac Solstice Saturn Sky Phoenix Arizona - Home.

Accommodations: With 800 cars in a rural part of Arizona, all of the hotels in Kingman are either full or way over-priced. Therefore, we have reserved 10 non-smoking rooms at the River Palms Hotel in Laughlin, which is 30 minutes away. The River Palms Hotel in Laughlin is one of the city's finest with more than 1000 rooms. Because they had no non-smoking rooms left in the tower, I have hard-blocked 10 non-smoking rooms for the group in the South Wing, which is all non-smoking. The cost through the room block is $44.95 per night, which you will get if you call 800-835-7903 and mention the group code "ROADSTR." If you want a smoking room, or if the room block is full, you can also book very cheaply through Las Vegas Hotels - Vegas Hotel Deals - Cheap Hotels | Travelworm, although they don't guarantee a non-smoking room and there is a $25 cancellation fee through them (or $75 if you cancel <48 hours). If you want to stay over Sunday, the rates drop to under $30. The plan is to stay two nights so we can leave our bags and clothes in our rooms giving us a bit more elbow room in our cars (and trunks).

Saturday Morning - Start in Seligman: We will be getting up early on Saturday and driving 100 miles East on I-40 to the start of the Fun Run in Seligman AZ (click here for a google map). When we get there, vehicles will be lined up by type in preparation for the start of first leg of the FUN RUN to Kingman. The trip is only 90 miles and this is not a timed event, so we will be stopping as curiosity dictates, including sampling some Hualapai Tribe BBQ and grabbing some group photos while checking out the other vehicles as they cruise by.

Saturday Afternoon/Evening in Kingman: Sometime in the afternoon we will be lining up the vehicles on Route 66 next to the Powerhouse Route 66 Museumfor viewing and judging. Entertainment, activities and vendors all day. Evening activities, downtown Kingman activities and entertainment sponsored by the Downtown Merchants Association. When we have had our fill, we will make the 30 mile trip back to our hotel in Laughlin.

Sunday Morning - Cruise to Topock / Golden Shores: All vehicles will again line up at the Powerhouse in Kingman for the run to Topock/Golden Shores, the location of the final get-together and awards. Along the 50 mile trip, there will be plenty of time to stop along the way in Oatman and other small towns. For the local cities and neighborhoods along the route, our 800 cars will be quite the spectical, so expect a lot of people lining the streets, or even up on the rooftops.

Marion's Mom's House: After arriving in Topock, we will be stopping by Marion's mom's house for a group photo (Marion is an active Sky-Sol member in Phoenix). Then it's off to Hooch's River Grill (928.768.3456), which is Marion's favorite watering hole, for a coke and some fairly good pizza (at least according to Marion). The owners, Larry & Mike, are execting us, and have said that they will block off parking spaces in front of the restaurant.

Sunday 2:00 Awards Ceremony: The Route 66 Fun Run awards program officially starts at 2:00 PM and lasts about an hour. If you left your bags in your room in Laughlin, you may want to skip the awards ceremony and make the 40 mile return trip to Laughlin at this time and then return to Topoch to meet us for the ride home.

Stop by London Bridge at Lake Havasu: The return trip to Phoenix from Topoch is 200 miles which will take about four hours. We will try to stop at Lake Havasu (about 30 minutes away) and get a picture of the cars crossing London Bridge

$55 Entry Fee: The Route 66 Association of Arizona is hosting this event, and the entry fee after April 2nd is $55. You can register by phone at 928-753-5001, or in person on Saturnday morning before 10:00 AM in Seligman. For this fee, you will get a t-shirt, a dash plaque, and a Route 66 license plate, and your car will be entered in the car show and you will gain entrance to the awards ceremony.

Anybody interested in driving Route 66?

When I called, I was told that there are two SKYs and two SOLSTICES already enrolled in the Route 66 Fun Run through Arizona (at the Nevada and California borders). Last year, they had 800 cars that did this two-day drive together through what is considered to be the most pristine and preserved section of Route 66.

My wife and I am going. If you have any interest, please PM me and we will coordinate meeting at the Start.
