With the Winter Solstice behind us, the days get longer and we start thinking about getting our Kappas back to the Streets of Willow for a track day. As we run with a driving school, roll bars are not required, and no experience is necessary. This is a great way to press yourself and your car and really learn some great stuff from professional instructors. While still quite some time away, we're just gauging interest at this point to see if there's enough folks to set up our own Kappa event or tag on to another session. Any takers?

Sounds very interesting. I like the part of no experience necessary. It would be great if this could be scheduled on the same weekend as Edwards AFB's public tour of the base (held once a month) as Willow Springs is quite close.
Here's a video of John Heinricy driving a Solstice GXP around Willow Springs.

Just guessing at this point, but it wouldn't surprise me if we got in around May. Completely up in the air on that, so we'll have to check interest and see where we can fit in. When's Edwards' public tour? As you mention, it's the same exit. Turn right for EAFB, left for WS. One of the great things about these driving school days is that there's no pressure to drive any faster than you're comfortable. You will leave there much faster than you arrived. We get a ton of track time, but most folks come back from day 1 claiming the skid pad lessons where the most informative.

We'll keep our fingers crossed there. Ya don't need a turbo to keep up at Streets of Willow, but it can get hot, and you will want a safe clean tune.
Keep us updated, we might be interested in participating. We already have plans to bring our Exige to Willow Springs in the upcoming months, but this would be a good opportunity to bring our Sky out to play.
Hi, newbie here, I'm fully interested in any socal road course, especially when you say they'll let us on without a roll bar. Haha, while we're at it, how about Horse Thief?

And where do I sign up?
First off, welcome to the forum!!! .
Ok, we don't have signups yet as we're checking options based on interest level. It'll be a few months, possibly even May before we get up there. Keep an eye out on the Pacfic forum as we get closer for more details.
Horse thief? Ouch. Might be better for drift practice, . When we use the school to get on the track they're just stay on the "Streets" and use dry and wet skid pads. Not that I'd pass up a chance to taste the dirt off HT, .
Oops, almost forgot this. If we go through the same driving school we 've used in the past, first time attendees go through a well organized day. After a 45 minute classroom session, folks are split into groups where you'll run well spaced out on the track. Instructors ride along at times to give you help. This it not racing, so there's no passing except when safe on the straight. Mixed in with track sessions, are wet and dry skid pad runs. You run at your own pace as you're comfortable. Folks who are already up to speed are pretty much free to run.
The track itself is 10-15 minutes outside of Lancaster in North LA County. Folks who come a distance typically grab a room in Lancaster the day before.
Living here and working at EAFB I can assure you that while yes there are "tours" they are not come as you are when you want. You have to schedule them in advance, pass a basic background check and they take up the whole day. I took a group of engineers to tour Ridley Mission control a few months back and they denied us access because one of the guy's DL had expired 2 days before our visit. Sent us packing back to the DMV for a temporary ID.
They have moved a number of the aircraft that were at the Museum to the main gate. To see them all you have to do is drive to the gate, park in the lot and walk around.
To be honest if someone wants to see some major aircraft on static display then the Joe Davies Heritage Airpark at Palmdale Plant 42 is your best bet. There are 15 or more aircraft on static display for viewing 7 days a week including 2 SR-71's and (just added) a B-52 Stratofortress.
For hotel stay, Lancaster or Palmdale is the best bet because Rosamond only has 2 ghetto no-tell-motels. Around the Mall Palmdale has multiple very nice hotels including a brand new Hilton and there are some nice ones in Lancaster too.
I suggest we join up with a speed ventures day in one of the weekends in May. That way our cost to participate may be less.
