How Do You Deal With Lack Of Trunk Space?

Hi Sky fans. I am really interested in the Sky and rented one for a day from a local car rental company. I loved the car, but the lack of storage, especially the trunk, is disheartening. There doesn't appear to be enough space even for a small overnight bag. If I can't take my sweetie for an overnight convertible weekend, that would really suck!

How have you dealth with the lack of trunk space? What do you do if you want an overnight trip?

Welcome to the forum!

I have luggage made for the SKY, it holds MORE than enough for a long Weekend for two.

Here is some fitted luggage from a supporting vendor:

Fitted Luggage - $50 OFF!

Some people put trailer hitches and pull a storage unit for longer trips. Some use a luggage rack on the trunk lid (Be careful not to overload or the trunk will dent).

Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice Luggage Rack made by Kappasphere

There are options!

We had a owner bring 96 long neck Buds and Bud Lights to a cruise, what else do you need!!!

Seriously if your trip is that long UPS for short weekend trips there is plenty of room unless you have to bring golfs clubs also.

It's simple. Take your sweetie, leave your clothes at home.

My wife and I took a 3 week trip from Alabama to Colorado. We got three duffle bags from WalMart for $10 each. Had the top up when the bags were in the trunk. Also had some hanging clothes laying flat. Took change in shoes, various snacks, jackets and a little suitcase of pills. On the way back, my brother-in-law surprised us with a gift of a large crock. I managed to fit it all in. We washed underwear once on the trip. If you don't take more clothes than you need, and especially if it is in the summertime and you wear T-shirts and shorts as I do, then it is very doable. We're now planning another trip of 2500 miles in the Fall and we'll pack similarly. Most people take way too many clothes.

Well, those Skycoolers can double as a travel bag also, we wanted to take the Sky up to cape cod for the week, but there was not way in hell to fit a weeks worth of clothes in the car...i also, purchased these roll up bags on Ebay , that i never used and will probaly never use either....they sit in the attic like the Sky sits in the garage.....

Welcome...
You will be surprised on how much room there is in the trunk. Yes there is only a small amount of room but with the right luggage bags you can fit a lot. I took out my air pressure machine ( What ever it's called) which is tucked in the side of the trunk and moved it under the hood. Removing that gives me a lot more room. Who needs that anyways when you have On-Star. I also have lots of storage space behind my seat. I am only 5 feet so I can move the driver's seat forward. They also sell a rack that is installed on the trunk. T.

I pick up my Sky look alike trailer next month for the ride to Teluride starting in Durango, Colorado. That's how I plan to solve the long distance run problem. Wow are they nice, just got back from looking at them close up and mine will be ready on the 10th of next Mo.

For the short or weekend runs the trunk has plenty of room for us, and like Sky07 said my wife put a 6 pack cooler behind her seat along with other things on top of it! It was a little cramped for me when we traded driving though!

Can you pm me on where you are getting your trailer from? I've been thinking of doing the same.

My wife and I have figured out how to pack for up to a week and still have room to put the top down. We pack in plastic grocery bags and zip lock bags. It is AMAZING what you can fit back there if you use every square inch of space back there. We have tried custom duffle bags and even a rolled up suit bag designed for the SKY, but in the end, the luggage takes up room and can't fill every nook and cranny.

Also, we can place a couple of dresses, shirts and/or pants on top of the gas tank, and the top keeps them pressed very nicely.

Also, my wife likes to bring her own pillow, so she stuffs one or two feather pillows and a blanket behind her seat (they compress very well). Last year, we had a couple come down to Phoenix for the entire winter, and they put a 4" thick suit bag plus more behind the passenger seat.

When we travel for more than a week at a time or if I need clunky stuff like an LCD projector, I have also shipped luggage and/or boxes of stuff to my destination (usually shipping the clothing and keeping the laptop and projector with us in the car).

I made my own bag that runs the length of the trunk. It's about 9x9x48 or something like that... however long the space is. It has a velcro top flap that allows access while in place. You can take quite a bit if you do a nice job folding. The long shoulder straps allow me to carry it like a backpack as well.
I also have one of the limited edition Sky cooler bags. Love that thing! Have used it countless times.
While researching bags before I made one, I discovered that 2 bowling ball bags that holds 2 balls each would fit nicely in there. Some tent bags also work back there.

Is this where you got yours? They are a little pricey but they look great, thinking about this one myself
adventuresportsproducts
Note: on their new product page they mixed up Solstice and Sky Pictures - but they still look great.

A cheaper alternative others have suggested to try these guys.
Piggy Backer Compact Cargo Trail

and the Curt hitch fits the standard Sky and will fit Redline with a modification around stock exhaust.
Search threads for installation pictures.

They are manufactured by Adventure Sports Products. They are a little pricey but well worth the extra cost.

1. They can be painted to exactly match your color or even custom painted with flames, graphics, etc.
2. Cost depends on the options you choose. You can order std. version and do the rest yourself or have it locally done, that way you have someone to fall back on for warrantee problems locally. Read the testimonials for sure!
3. There have the best air ride suspension on the market. One that you set and forget, no fiddling around with like some I've heard about.
4. I was so impressed with them that my wife and I decided to become Independant Regional Distributors for them.
5. I have met with the owner and have toured the factory and I am very impressed with them and the procuct.

I will be glad to give you any information you need and once I have my own and run it through the paces I will post my findings on the forum.

Their link is motorcycle trailers, motorcycle trailer, motorcycle accessories, motorcycles, motorcycle cargo trailers, auto cargo trailers, car cargo trailers, utility trailers, cargo trailers

Thanks everyone for your advice. I feel a lot better about it now. I like the idea about using the space behind the passenger seat - for a smaller person (my wife is 5'3'') there's no reason she can't slide her seat forward to create some space.
