A hard run from Sac or the Bay Area is about 6 and 1/2 hours.

So whatever we plan, Friday afternoon, evening, and Saturday morning would be the tie in times for us and the southern group. Saturday night in San Simeon would be ok for us and we could do some recon in the afternoon and again Sunday morning.

Not sure about Hiway 1 in January after these rains. It has a tentancy to wash down into the ocean in several places and it takes CalTrans a few months to repair for the spring and summer seasons.

I think we could do a 2 nighter - 3 dayer, but a 3 nighter - 4 dayer might be a little much.
Thanks for bringing up the point about Hwy 1 in the winter. Didn't think about road conditions. Dave, do you know how to find out about Hwy 1 and any potential problems based on weather?

I have plans on the 1st, so heading down a day earlier wouldn't work for me.
I'll be up and ready to go early on the 2nd...so just let me know if I am driving down alone (if the rest of you want to go down on the 1st) and if not, where we're meeting and what time

Since it appears we will have sufficient time to check out Solvang on Friday & Saturday - I'd like to head up to the Cavalier Inn after the Solvang walk around on Saturday. If I read posts correctly, so far it will be me and and LEChief who will be staying in San Simeon the night of the 3rd.

What a terrific way to start the New Year!

2 nighter-3 days

OK, we booked the Best Western in Buellton for Friday & Saturday. (good rate) We will do whatever the San Diego Roadster's have planned Friday evening and Saturday.

For the WCKCC bunch, Sonia's "alternative" to head up the coast on the 4th to recon the Cavalier Inn at San Simeon is good. Breakfast/coffee before we leave would be our preference. OR, we could have Sunday brunch/lunch somewhere in route or at San Simeon? Then we could caravan north on our way home, stopping as needed. Whatever we do it will be fun with this group!

Everybody:

It seems that we have several tracks going on for the New Year's Solvang Trip. So let's review:

Availability:

Road-Runner-I: 1st through the 4th
Go Thunda: 1st through the 4th
LE Chief: 1st through the 4th (Hot Frash OK'ed a 3 nighter - 4 dayer)
EbonySky: 2nd through the 4th
SXY SKY: 2nd through the 4th

Primary Activities:

Meet with San Diego Roadsters (Arriving between 12-1 on 2nd; Leaving afternoon on 3rd?; or, maybe the morning on 4th?
Recon San Simeon - Hearst Castle (Either Afternoon/Evening on 1st & morning of 2nd; Afternoon on 3rd; and/or, Morning on 4th?)

Known San Diego Roadster Activities:

Leaving San Diego around 7 AM
Number coming ??
Meet with us - whenever we arrive
Doing Solvang as tourists
No local runs planned

Known Sacramento Roadster Activities:

Numbering coming - 5 transport devices with 9 people
Meet with them

Desired Activities:

Extensive Danish enrichment
Checking San Simeon accommodations and Hearst Castle potential run
Routing through new environments

Just some thoughts:

Three of us could link up in the Bay Area or I-5 on the 1st and hit San Simeon Thrusday afternoon and evening and do some initial planning on that day and the morning of the 2nd. (Would need hotel in San Simeon for Thrusday night)
Then make the short travel down to Buellton to meet with San Diego Group at noon. (about a 2 hour run - Hiway 1 to 101)
The others could link up in the Bay Area on the morning of the 2nd and tie in with us and the San Diego Group in Solvang in the afternoon and remain connected through Saturday afternoon when they leave (if they are going home on the 3rd) and we could finish up Solvang or do a Los Padres National Forest run (escorting the San Diego Group back to Hiway 101) over the hill into Santa Barbara for late lunch/early dinner on the pier and return to Buellton via Gaviota Pass for Saturday night. (Would need hotel in Buellton for Friday and Saturday Night - Go Thunda & EbonySky already confirmed)
Sunday morning would be an early rise and run via back route to San Luis Obispo/Morro Bay/San Simeon (for those that weren't there on the 1st/2nd), lunch in Cambria, and then a quick drive home (it's only about 5 hours from there).

Rested and ready to go back to work on Monday.

Or, if the San Diego Group heads home on Saturday and we have had enough of Solvang area Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, we could head back up to San Simeon for Saturday night and Sunday morning. (EbonySky and Go Thunda would have to change reservations)

What's everybody's thoughts?

Isn't trip planning and logistics a wonderful activity?

Dave, good job laying this out! I was thinking about the same kind of things for the past several days.

We will stick with heading to Solvang on Friday. We just want a day of rest before we head south. I have no problem canceling our Saturday reservations and getting a room at the Cavalier Inn for Saturday. But if the follks who want to drive down to San Simeon on New Years Day stay over that night, you may not want to retrace on Sunday. Makes no difference to us. Early dinner in Santa Barbara sounds good if the San Diego Roadsters head home and then back to Buellton. If we spend Saturday at the Best Western we can hit a Danish breakfast place in Solvang Sunday if we do not do this on Saturday morning. Then play tourist for a while before heading out of town, unless we get our fill of Solvang as you mention. I know that Patricia and I want to spend some tourist time in Solvang which is why we are making this trip. As for a lunch stop on Sunday...we can decide that later or Dave you know the area well, what do you suggest on the run up Hwy 101.

My only concern is that Gothunda and Roadrunner will want to begin the day at 5AM! In that case we will hook up with them later in the day.

Who is our contact person from San Diego...Tim? Who is going to be the contact person from Northern California group?

Barb take a nap!

Just putting all of the cards (and possibilities) on the table.

I've put together some google maps for distances and times from San Jose to San Simeon; San Jose to Buellton; I-5 Tracey Rest Stop to Buellton either via 101 or I-5, 46, & 101; Buellton to Santa Barbara and back to Buellton via Gaviota; and Buellton to San Simeon via the back route (Vandenberg Air Force Base). Would you like me to send you the links?

I'm trying to get alittle more information from the San Diego Roadsters (TIM) regarding number coming and when they might be heading home (Date and Time) so that we could either help with an escort over Los Padres Pass into Santa Barbara and we would stop at the pier for dinner or split in Buellton with them heading south and us heading north with a stop in San Simeon for those that weren't there earlier.

Alot is still up in the air.

You know us, it takes an act of congress to decide if we are going to play miniture golf and then go have ice cream; go have ice cream first and then play miniture golf; or just play miniture golf; or just go have ice cream; and do we want to walk or drive; oh well, let's just go to bed.

We might be going down in two groups

Bill:

You and Sonia might want to tie in for the Friday run down from the Bay Area. Especially if the rest of us head down on New Year's Day. OMG, we'll miss the Rose Parade and the Bowl Games!!!!

I'm off the 31st and the 1st so I'll be rested before the clock strikes 12. UC Davis gives us two days off for Christmas and New Years, the holiday and the day before for travel. I'm working the Friday after Christmas, but took the New Years Friday off for the run.

Hot Frash will be out by about 9-9:30 New Year's Eve. I normally have to wake her up to wish her a Happy New Year and it's usually a "Yea Right!!! Kiss Kiss" and she's gone again.

Barb's as hyper as I am - so no nap possible.

I am good with whatever plans are finalized (that is the operative word) for departing the Bay Area on the 2nd and getting home the evening of the 4th.

Honestly though I have to say that I really wish we were all driving down together on the 2nd...our family tree has branches that are going their own way

Just want to let the Cavalier Inn know our plans so they can either keep the rooms I've reserved for the 3rd...or change them for those of you who may want to check out the Inn/San Simeon on the night of the 1st. If the roads are passable, I really would like to stay the night of the 3rd in San Simeon. Dave/Phyllis, sounds like you'd be up for that too.

Gotta go back to bed...oh, wait, I am at work - I'll just put my head down on my desk instead

Ok so I need to know if a hotel change is in the plan. I have booked Fri and Sat at the Best Western. Is that still the plan? And yes I am back on the forum (did you miss me) also I don't think that the napping sickness strikes until you are well into your 60's so I have no such problem. Barb

Miss you...Miss you...were you gone? What will be missed is your employer giving you time to post on the Sky Forum while you are "supposed" to be working

As for changing hotel dates/that is up to you. Do you want to be with the IN crowd (not necessarily over 60 crowd) and stay the 3rd up at San Simeon (ocean view, fireplace, near Hearst Castle) or stay in Buellton for another night (like Buellton needs 2 nights - pleeezzzz)

When you decide (please make it soon) just let me know so I can notify the hotel accordingly (that would be the Cavalier Inn in San Simeon hotel)

Sonia, I know you reserved some rooms, do you have a special rate quote at the San Simeon hotel that expires by 5PM today? Does the Cavalier have a dinning room or are there dinner options nearby. Should we eat early in Santa Barbara and drive up to San Simeon or is that just too much driving. As previously stated, we do not mind making the reservation change if that is what our group wants to do. I will check this thread before 5PM to get an update.

It's not about Buellton, that's just where the Best Western is...it's about being near Solvang without paying Solvang motel prices, I think. If the San Diego Roadster group decides to stay 2 nights at Buellton, are we as a group going to stay too or do our own thing on Saturday afternoon/evening?

Tim, could you give us an update on what your group will do...1 night or 2 night stay in the Solvang area?

Bill

Everybody:

Gary and I just finished up with a general discussion.

Decision Time: Let's all go down together on Friday.

That said we could all meet up in the San Jose area on Friday morning at 9:45(2 hour 20 minute run from Roseville, 2 hour 15 minute run from Valley Springs, 1 hour 45 minute run from Napa, 1 hour run from Lafayette, 45 minute run from Hayward). There's a Starbucks @ 1712 Tully Road (408)531-8944 just off of Hiway 101, just south of the 680/280 interchange.

Leave there at 10:00

It's about a 4 hour and 45 minute road run to Buellton from there. Add in potential stops at Salinas, King City, Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, and/or Santa Maria for gas/food/smoke/stretch/whatever and that would put us into Buellton sometime between 4 and 5 PM.

We would check in at the hotel (Best Western Buellton) and meet up with the San Diego Folks for Dinner and whatever.

Next morning we could rise and head into Solvang for breakfast at 8:00 and do whatever together with the San Diego Group until about 1 or 2 PM.

We would then head north to San Simeon via the back route through Vandenberg Air Force Base and some photo opportunities along the coast. That's about a 3 hour road run. Add in potential stops in Pismo Beach or Morro Bay and that would put us into Cambria/San Simeon between 5 or 6 pm.

The owner of the Cavalier Inn is the former Fire Chief of the North Coast Volunteer Fire Company that was assigned to the San Luis Obispo County Fire Department when I was the North Coast Battalion Chief for CDF. He gave me my nickname of "Yippie Yi Oh Kiyyie LeMay" when we had to round up a herd of Hearst Ranch cattle that got out on Hiway 1 late one night. Caused a couple of pretty serious car accidents (Cow versus Car - BOTH LOSE). I'll be talking with him this weekend to see if we can get some "really good" rates for Saturday night. I'll post the information by Sunday night.

We would check in at the hotel and have dinner either in San Simeon or Cambria (might stop for dinner on the way in prior to checking in at the hotel). We could do some planning for the potential Hearst Castle that evening.

The next morning we could rise and have breakfast at 8 and do some driving around to the Castle and general area for a recon, stop for lunch around noon and hit the road for home about 1. That would put everybody back in there respective home areas around 6 to 7 Sunday evening.

Well, sounds as though you all have a plan. I have to work the 2nd, but believe I can meet up with you all for dinner Fri. evening.
Maybe make a stop at the Chumesh Casino also? Meet back up Sat. morning for the activities Sat. and run back toward San Simeon. Note that Santa Rosa Rd. from Bouillton to Lompoc is a great road to drive also. I'll keep up to date by this thread and have phone numbers too. I'm in Chattanooga, TN till the 28th. Miss the Sky. I'm having to use my daughter's 350Z Coupe'. Merry Christmas to all.
