Photos! SoCal SKYs Idyllwild II Run

Okay, gang! Here are the pictures from our little "event" yesterday. Let's show the folks back east what REAL Winter Driving is supposed to look like!

The day started for me with a gathering at the Cars and Coffee show in Irvine where I met a few other kappa folks. I got there at 7:05AM and was banished to the overflow lot next to some dubious company... Lots of nice cars at the show this time around. Here are just a few pics...

The show is very informal. Just lots of cars parked all over the place in semi-random order. And tons of people wandering around chatting. Really tough to get good pictures...

After that, it was off to McDonalds where 16 Kappas gathered. We lost one who was't able to go with us, but we picked up one on Ortega Highway - plus the KappaSphere SKY in Perris, so I will say we had a pretty consistent average "16 cars" for the day!

The gathering spot at McDonalds gave us all a chance to meet and chat, and to clean up our cars real nice before getting them dirty. We also had our first Green SKY ever at a SoCal SKYs event!

We then headed south on Antonio Parkway for just a few short miles, and then we were off to Ortega Highway and our roll of the dice with the Flagman...

Here is a great shot of our entire group. We had a Mini Cooper from RPI tagging along as the stinger on the tip of our tail. If I saw the Mini Cooper then I knew we had everybody...

We timed the construction zone perfectly. Only had time to snap one good shot of all of us stacked up before we were waved through... Then it was the beautiful trees and hills of Ortega Highway.

Here we are at our favorite "Group Photo Spot" on Ortega Highway. Interestingly, while our first run back in June of '06 seemed to be a power struggle between Silver Pearl and Midnight Blues, this one seemed to be a fight between black and yellow...

We took our "People Picture" too. We also had "the Mountain Men" wearing our warm, mountaineering top-down headgear, although it was pretty warm on the mountain today and the head protection wasn't needed...

The dudes with the hats are John of JandR, Bob (though some people call him "Bill"), yours truly, and Ray.

Then it was off to the Real Mountain, where we climed to over 6,000 feet. The weather was very different from our first Idyllwild run last year. That one was in January, and it got pretty close to freezing up there. This year we were in the 70s in the desert, and only dropped into the low 60s at elevation. It was actually very comfortable...

We got into a staredown match with a couple of locals. None of our cars were going to be the one to blink first, and I think they respected us for that. In the end, they raised no objection to us continuing on our way and having a great time on their mountain.

All in all, a great day and a great drive with great people. I thank all the SoCal SKYs - both old pals and new friends - for coming out to spend the day with me.

I am already looking forward to next time! Until then...

Sorry we missed this. Nora's has been fighting off pnuemonia and bronchitis for the past month so we thought it best to pass on this.

She is on the mend, in fact she has been very "productive

" lately if you know what I mean.
