WCKCC Central California Coast Meet Apr 11-13 HWY 1
Get Ready Gang; this will be a great weekend. We have a wonderful weekend planned for you. Bring your cameras because we are going through some of the most picturesque environments California has to offer.
We will start from Paso Robles and head north on Lake Nacimiento Road, (G14) to Interlake Rd, to Jolon Rd, to Lockwood-Jolon Rd to FORT HUNTER LIGGETT.
The road here is just beautiful but you have not seen anything yet. We will enter the fort, provided everyone brought their identification cards and proof of insurance. I will check to make sure they are not in the middle of maneuvers or lock-down.
Once on the base, we will head over to San Antonio Mission just a couple of miles away. Great photo opportunities here. Randolph Hearst built the Hacienda Guest Quarters/Lodge and Restaurant. We were planning to have lunch there but I heard the restaurant recently closed.
From there we will travel over the Santa Lucia mountain range along Nacimiento/Ferguson Rd 17 miles to Hwy 1 and the Pacific Ocean. We will head south along Hwy 1 and stop for lunch at Ragged Point just north of San Simeon. Then off to check out the elephant seals.
After lunch, we will cruise through Cambria and stop at some of the Galleries and shops. From Cambria we will head east up Hwy 46, (actually I have a secret road that will get us to the 46). On this road, we will stop for a great photo opportunity with vast green valleys, the Pacific Ocean and Morro Rock as a backdrop.
A little ways up the road is a great roadside bakery/coffee shop for a quick desert. After our caffeine fix we will head back into Paso Robles for Dinner and our meeting.
I think you will have some downtime after the drive to head back to your room and catch your breath before the night's festivities.
I still have many of the details to work out. I have posted some pictures to entice you.
Please respond to this thread so I can gauge the interest.
We look forward to seeing you.
Sal

Jane and I will try to make this one. Looks and sounds great. I don't want to assume anything, with this being a three day event, will we meet sometime somewhere Friday evening in Paso Robles. The Run is on Saturday and Sunday we go home.

SoCal SKYs was playing with the idea of a trip to Solvang around April-ish. The thinking was that we could drive north, and maybe some of the NorCal SKYs could drive south, and we could all meet more-or-less in the middle in Solvang.
A central coast trip sounds great, but I would be concerned about having to head north in the wee hours, driving all day (on what seems like a great drive to be sure) and then not arriving home until very late at night. The advantage of the Solvang hop is that both northerners and southerners would do all the driving just to get there, then we can walk around town for a bit and head home our own respective ways. If we planned to meet there around lunchtime - say noon till 2:30 or so then nobody has to leave too early or get home too late.
That is a very different trip from a "central coast drive." Not sure if we can do some sort of coordination or not, or even if that makes sense, but I wanted to let you know what we had been thinking about...

Sal, this sound's like an all day fun trip. The hill's will be all green this time of year too. Where will the dinner/meeting be located? Will you be recommending a host motel? This may be detail's you haven't worked out yet but just thought I'd ask.
Here is a link to a printable version of the first leg of our adventure.
From our starting point and accomodation, the Adelaide Inn ( Welcome to the Adelaide Inn, a hotel near San Luis Obispo, California ) at the junction of Hwy 101 and Hwy 46 /24th St. From here we will take the back roads to Fort hunter Liggett and the historic San Antonio Mission for a break and photos.
Here are a couple more links to help you follow our route.
There is an option here: Some will choise to head strat to the roadside Bakery/Coffee shop at the junction of Hwy 46 E and Vinyard Rd. I would like you to consider taking an alternative route which I will map out in the links below. This is a very cool drive I know you will enjoy. The downside is, it is not paved for a portion of the ride. The road is very well maintained and in the spring I do not anticipate much dust. I have taken my Solstice on this road many times without regret.
Sorry for the multiple links, (I had to fool Google Maps to allow this route)
And Finally home for a rest before our dinner and meeting at Big Bubba's Bad BBQ - Bad To The Bone , where you can try riding their mechanical bull, (just across the street from our hotel).
Leg 1 = 50.7 mi – about 1 hour 29 mins Paso to Fort/Mission
9:00am to 10:00am
photo stop & break
Leg 2 = 26.8 mi – about 1 hour 34 mins Mission to Coast Hwy 1 (it will not take this long)
10:30am to 12:00pm
Leg 3 = 20.3 mi – about 23 mins To Ragged Point for lunch
12:00pm to 12:30pm
Lunch Break = about 1 hour 30 mins
12:30pm to 2:00pm
optional If you would rather check out the elephant seals we can skip this detour.
Leg 4 = 38.1 mi – about 45 mins Ragged Point to Hwy 46 Coffee Break
5.2 mi – about 9 mins
9.2 mi – about 24 mins
5.5 mi – about 14 mins 3.0 mi – about 6 mins
Total of 58 mi - 1 hour 32 min
2:00pm to 3:30pm
If you choose to avoid the maintained dirt road you can wait for us at the Bakery/Coffee shop or head back to the hotel on your own and we will hook up for dinner at 6:30pm
Alternative
Leg 4 = 17.4 mi – about 22 mins
2:00pm to 2:30pm
Coffee Break at roadside Bakery 30 min
for
3:30pm to 4:00pm
Leg 5 = 8.3 mi – about 13 mins Coffee Break to (Home) Adelaide Inn Paso Robles
4:00pm to 4:15pm
Total trip miles 154
Total trip time 9 hours including lunch, breaks and photo ops
This is a full day but do not let the time scare you. We will take many breaks and photo stops. You should still have 2 hours to nap in your room before dinner.

I went there today to check out the rooms. They are new and spacious with very cool furnishings and amenities, (microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker). They have fruit and fresh baked cookies in the lobby all day and muffins in the morning. There is a starbucks directly accross the street.
For the price you can not beat it.
1 King Bed non-smoking $102.80
2 Queen Beds non-smoking $107.80
(they do have smoking rooms for those of you who do not want to stand outside in the cold)
The rooms are blocked, (reserveed) only until March 11th.
After that they will be released to the public. There still might be rooms available but they will be around $119 a night.
I know it is hard making a whole weekend out of a car club trip but beleive me, this adventure will be worth it.
Unfortunately, we will need to start our drive early, (at 9:00am) so driving in that morning might not be practile.
We hope you can stay for our club meeting/dinner scheduled for 6:30pm at Big Bubba's Bad to the Bone BBQ,
link Big Bubba's BBQ If not, I think you will be pretty tired driving home after our excursion.
There are options; Some folks who HAVE to get home can say good bye after lunch and head north up Hwy one to Monterey and beyond. If the majority think the planned drive is too much, we can shorten it to accomodate.

The drive is planned for Saturday.
There will probably be a breakfast and Sunday morning drive planned for those interested. I have not made arrangements for that yet.
We really hope you can make it.

We will miss this one and it's killing us. This is beautiful country and the views . . .spectacular.
Unfortunately, my sister and I will be in SoCal that weekend surprising my Mom on her 80th b'day.
On another note - We'll have the SKY and my Brother-in-Law and Sister-in-Law (in a Vette but hey are good people anyway!) will be in Morro Bay the week after Easter so I'll check some of the spots out!
Have a great time and make sure pictures get posted ! ! !

SGS (Silly Grin Syndrome) still has me in it's grip and I don't want to be let go!
Universal Law of Location:No matter where you go, there you are.
This is my ole stompin grounds from when I was the North Coast Battalion Chief in SLO. Did a few cliff rescues in the Ragged Point area (amazing that some of them were acutally "rescues" cuz it's a LONG WAY DOWN). I didn't look at your routes yet, but if the run from Cambria up to Hiway 46 is up the ole' Santa Rosa Creek Road, that would be a fun run (Did a few control burns on the Pheland Brothers Ranch areas).
Too bad we couldn't get a "permit" from the Cal Dept of Parks & Recreation to do a special run to Hearst Castle and park in front of the main entrance for a photo op and an special tour. It would probably cost each of us an arm and a leg, knowing how money straped the Parks Dept is.
Phyllis and I will get off early on Friday and leave Roseville about 1:00 PM. That should get us into Paso about 5:30-6:00 Friday evening.
See you there.

I am thrilled you plan on making the trip. It will be an epic drive. I checked out Santa Rosa Rd but I opted for Santa Rita Rd instead. That is the optional portion of the drive. If people want they can head straight up Hwy 46 back to Paso Robles. I hope some will join me for a detour off of Hwy 46 down Old Creek Rd to Santa Rita Rd and back to Hwy 46. It will be well worth it.
See you then.
