WCKCC Participation at 2009 NASSM Denver Nationals (6/18-21)
Everybody:
There's alot of Californians indicating that they are heading to the Denver, Colorado event in June 09. Some have already made reservations at the hotel. Sooooo - Before I jump in with all four feet (Two of mine and two of Phyllis') what's the plan?
Group up and convoy for Northern, Central, and Southern?
One group from the Northern and Central via I-80 and one group from the Southern via I-15?
Two Groups meet in Salt Lake City and a whole California Group via I-80 to Cheyenne and I-25 into Denver?
Start Date to get to Denver by evening of June 17th or morning of June 18th?
Overnight Stop inroute? Where? (From Sacramento Area it's over 1,200 miles) Half way point is between Elko, Nevada and Salt Lake City, Utah.
Thought I'd check with the Group(s) before making my reservations at the hotel for either Wednesday Night or wait until Thrusday. (Barb and Ed: KJ SKY: Sonia: Bigdog: FlyingZ: What are your plans?)
It's not too early to start talking about it now.

Thrusday morning has check in and a couple of runs starting at 10 AM.
We're you planning on leaving the weekend before and hitting the tourist traps along the way and arriving Wednesday night or Thrusday morning? Or leaving Wednesday morning and staying over somewhere in between and arriving Thrusday afternoon/evening?
My thought was it might take a day or two to get there for the event and then a couple of days to get home, either as a group or as seperate units. With all that are signed up from the "Core" TelleTubby Family we might be able to go the whole way together, meet somewhere in the middle, and possibly tie in with the group from Southern California. What do you think?
Oh, by the way, the YouTube links for the Tubbies is a crackup. I love the way they dance!!!!!

I just happened across your thread when I was searching for anything with Utah in it. For those traveling from northern California besides Elko and Salt Lake you have the option of staying over night in Wendover NV. It is on the UT NV boarder about 90 miles from SLC and has a number of casinos that are reasonable on the week days.
You might also consider traveling I-70 at least one direction. It is much more scenic then I-80 through Wyoming. Also if you have the time on the way home consider traveling south of Denver to Durango CO and spend an extra day traveling the Teluride Orray Silverton loop via the million dollar highway. I just returned from there and it was spectacular. For info check out this link "Ticket to Telluride" Tour on September 12-14 Weekend - Western Colorado Loop
From there you can travel through the red rock country of south eastern Utah back to I-70 and I-15/I-80.

Thanks for the heads up information about Wendover. I was looking at that as a potential stop/bathroom/fuel/cigarette break location. But with your info, it might be an overnighter point.
It appears that a few of the California Group might make a "vacation" out of this run and start out the Saturday prior (13th) and hit things like Yellowstone and Custer's Little Bighorn prior to arriving in Denver on Wednesday night. Then we would be set for all of the activities that start Thursday morning.
Exact locations and routes are still in the planning stages at this point. We'll need to see what everybody would like to do.
Looks like a great event and lots of cars.

Was playing this weekend and went into a mode of "Where do we want to go?
Looked at starting out in Valley Springs on Saturday morning. Heading down and over the Sierras via 108 or 120 through Yosemite to 395 and going through Death Valley. We could stay the night at the Furnance Creek Ranch or complete a hard run to Las Vegas via Pahrump for Saturday Night.
The next day would be starting out at Death Valley or Las Vegas and running through Pipes National Monument and down to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park for Sunday afternoon and night at the North Rim Lodge.
Monday heading out and through Zion National Park, Cedar Breaks National Monument, and Bryce Canyon National Park and staying at the Bryce Canyon Lodge Monday night.
Tuesday hitting Capitol Reef National Park, Arches National Park, and Colorado National Monument and staying near Grand Junction Tuesday Night.
Wednesday morning heading for Bloomfield via Rocky Mountain National Park by way of 40 and 34 arriving late Wednesday night.
It's a pretty aggressive run from California via Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado, but it would be through some great country and we could fill up a bunch of camera cards.

Hey Tink, I think we need to plan a sit down and make a plan for this before the run run (well you know what I mean ) Who else wants to join in on the planning stages of where to go before nationals in June. Planning Committee

2) GoThunda

It was fun just playing with the maps and Google Earth
Yeah. There are sooooo many options and routes that we could take and it all depends on what areas of Utah and Colorado that everyone would like to visit or could explore during the several days prior to arriving in Denver on Wednesday Night.
Wouldn't we want to do a "pre-run"?

Am I the only one who has her hotel room reserved to arrive on Wednesday?
Figured we'd want to get checked in and then check out the area before the festivities begin.
However, anything you guys want to plan is fine with me. Just need to firm up the dates so when I do get a job I can tell my new(est) employer that I will be taking at least a weeks vacation in June.
I do recall going to a place called "Garden of the Gods" in either Colorado or Utah (hey, I was a kid and, as you all know, was a long, long time ago). which was really beautiful.
Can we manage to add in a day or two so we can raft the Colorado River? That's somewhere near where we are going, right

I'm scheduled for Wednesday night. I believe GoThunda changed their's from Thrusday to Wednesday. I think there are several others that have a Wednesday arrival time.
Don't know about rafting the Colorado. Some of those trips can last 3 to 4 days, especially if you're doing the Grand Canyon portion. It's always a thought and everyone should put all of their desires on the table. As flexible as our group is, we should be able to meet most everyone's needs.
The last discussions were about leaving Saturday and making a southern-central Utah National Park run and arriving Wednesday and then leaving Sunday and doing a straight shot back to California over a two day period to be back Monday night. So that's finish work on Friday, 5 days to get there, 3 days at the Nationals, 2 days to get home, and back to work on Tuesday. Now for those "retired types" adjustments can be made.
