question for Texas laps for charity drivers

I have a question after doing the laps at TMS on the 24th. This was my first time doing the laps and I was a little disappointed that I couldn't get up to speed fast enough. I have the 5 speed manual redline and when coming out of the corner I was going into 5th gear, should I have stayed in 4th to get it up to speed quicker?
I wanted to use the corners to build speed going into straightaway but a Jaguar in front of me was going slow in the corner and then he punched down the back straight obviously leaving me behind and when I did get it up in time to hit the corner and he was hitting his breaks in front me so I couldn't carry the speed through the corner and down the front straight.
I want to get this figured our before next time in September when I come back up there to do more laps. So any tips or information would be greatly appreciated.
I also learned that I would rather do the laps with the club rather than the VIP laps that get led by a ford SUV!!!

Thanks

Having done this event three times now, I made it a point to mix where I want to make my run. This last time was the corners. Plan ahead with the driver in front of you and set your gap for what you want to hit. More often than not you will only get either the turns or the straight, but not a full combination of the two.

This May's event seemed like the pace trucks were corralling a little more.
I did not do as well as last September. The trucks were not letting me get as large of a gap.
