Saturn Sky in the Winter

I'm graduating next year and I'm for sure going to purchase a car.. and I am in love with the sky RL..can't stop thinkin about it. But i don't want to be stupid and buy something that isn't practical. So here's my question, is its safe to have saturn sky as my only car considering the weather conditions in canadian winters? I live in montreal by the way. Thanks guys

Not good for winter

Hey Bass the Sky is really not a good car for winter. I bought one because I didn't need a practical vehicle. You on the other hand should look at something more suited for our winters. Also there is not a lot of room to carry much in a Sky. So my opinion is to look for something more practical.

If you lived in Florida and did not ever need a trunk, I would say go for it.

This car is anything but practical, that is what makes it fun.

And for anyone that is going to tell this guy that it is OK for all year round , keep in mind he lives in a city where the winters can be so rough that they built the malls 7 stories UNDERGROUND!

Winter: beater.

I didn't plan to get one, but it was a great decision. Buy something cheap that's good in the snow to protect your Sky, and don't look back!

I wouldn't suggest either Kappas for northern winter driving simply because of the ground clearence issue. Any more than 5-6 inches of snow and you've got a snowplow, not a car. RWD has nothing to do with it. In fact, I'll take RWD over FWD anyday, anytime, anywhere.

Stop right there. The SKY is the antithesis of practical. If you even "think" practical, the SKY is not for you. It is for those who laugh at practical. Those who immerse themselves in inpracticality like a pig wallowing in mud...to the point that when we smile...all you see is the whites of our teeth. Oink Oink Slop Slop Squish Squish.....how much fun.

Safe? You're still thinking practical. You must unlearn what you have learned. Think impractical. The question isn't "Is it safe"? The question is "Do you really care"?

Love is blind. The honeymoon will be heaven. The first six months will be great. But when winter desends....you will think...oh what have I done....what have I done....and you will go out and find a beater mistress and two-time on your SKY like never before.

I'm in Calgary and mine is year round driven!

Probably one of the few Sky's that will see snowy days and track days.

It all depends

on factors like how often do you need to leave the house.

I life in northeast Ohio very near Lake Erie - a couple weeks back we got about 2 feet of snow - with drifts up to nearly 4 feet - anything short of a Hummer is not practical in those conditions. the plows even had trouble getting out. I do currently have a 2007 Accord with Bridgestone Blizzak snow tires - and after I cleared my drive - it handled the snow very well - took my son out to try some sledding (which didn't really work out - powder layer was too deep) - I saw a disabled van a couple cars a mail truck and a tow truck all get stuck int he snow for various lengths of time. I had no trouble with the Accord plus snow tires. However, I would not have even considered taking a Sky out in those conditions, would not have made it 100 feet past the end of my driveway.

When I do buy my Sky early in 2009 - I will have until near the end of 2009 to decide if I will turn in the Accord or buy out the lease. I do have another car in the household so that is a plus - but the Accord will be 3 years old an have only about 22,000 miles on it - so currently thinking I will keep it if at all possible.

Since I work at home and have my wife's car as well - and my parents live not far away - I could probably pull of having the Sky as y only car and in the winter on the rare occasions where we do get a lot of snow I could either wait until the plows have done their job or take the wife's car - depending on her schedule.

If I turn in the Accord then I can start saving that $ towards the restoration of my 1964 GTO.

At least one forum member has got a second set of rims with narrower winter tires on them - but ground clearance could still be an issue.

Welcome to the forum. The Sky is an obession. Once you see one, you have to have it.

I am sure you have a car now that works in Canadian weather, so why not keep it for those bad days and have the Sky for the good weather.

Hi Bass
I'm in Montreal and the only thing my car will see in the winter is a cover and some new mods. But it's my 4th vehicle so it's OK just sitting in the garage.
I would not recommend a low to the ground, RWD convertible as a main driver in this climate, and this winter being one of the worst on record I can tell you that there are side roads that are not passable even now for this car. Buy yourself a cheap beater for the winter if you really want a Sky.

hey sidejam.. how does it handle in the snow? does it move? or do u not dare take it out when its snowing hard?.. thanks..

apparently the new 08 cobalt SS is going to have the same engine as the redline so i think i might go for that.

I would say it could be a good choice! I used to have a Cobalt SS supercharged! Love it but even if its not practical at all, i love my RL to death! its so beautyful. I like the base sky as well but it doesnt have the same aggressive design of the RedLine!

Base so if you get 20 No's and 1 Yes you will go with the yes?

I understand how you feel about the Redline. The only way I would say to buy it is if you forget about driving it in the winter and buy yourself a winter beater.

Good Luck

Personnally if you want to crash your sky its the best thing you can do, driving it in montreal's winter

Im in Estrie and took mine out last night, but its still to dirty and cold to really drive it well. The road are pretty bad
