going to strip

Something else I've always wanted to do; some questions:
1) I have stick what RPM to leave,
2) what traction setting,
3) what tire pressure - i run 30psi on stock tires, ran 40 in autocross was thinkin' 25 for traction.

Ernest I think u got most experience at track - help please

Try different RPMs starting around 2500 and change 200 rpm and go again, use the rpm that gives you the best 60' times is what I've always been told and it seems to work. Clutch release is also important, you may have to feather it out some to slow down wheel spin; bottom line here is to be consistent with how you do it. "Dropping the clutch" is hard on all of drivetrain and usually results in just a lot of wheel spin, burning rubber and bad (high) 60' times with resultant bad 1/8 or 1/4 mile ET, etc.

I'd start with traction in competition mode, what we did and found it worked best but I have an automatic so may be different with stick. Again try different settings to see which gives you the best 60' time. Totally shutting down traction control will just lead to 1 wheel spinning and not letting LSD do it's thing right but definitely don't want all of the electronic babysitters shutting down throttle or adding brake pressure, etc.

Same thing for tire pressures try different pressures in 2# increments or maybe even 5# increments if you're not seeing any real differences, but 25 if probably a good start if using street tires. Too low pressure will increase traction, but very hard on street tires and stock drivetrain, as is too much pressure being hard on tires due to too much wheel spin.

Finally, make only 1 change at a time on these so you know what is making the change. Have seen some make a change to all 3 and don't have any real idea what the final effect was due to and had a real mess going.

You're fine Teri with 29. That is the recommended psi for normal street use. When folks take their cars to the track they need to adjust from normal street psi.

Your best bet is to try running different tire pressure, launching at different rpms, etc. Don't dump the clutch though. You might have to ride it a little bit but the stock clutch might not be up to the task. Or...just don't drag race it. The car is much better on a road course.

Best RPM to launch was around 3500 with a slight feathering of the clutch. Not exactly a normal (street driving) engage, but not a dump either.

I turned all traction systems completely off (hold down for 10 seconds) Tire pressure around 25, I wouldn't want to go below that.....not with these tires anyhow.

Which track are you going to, and when? maybe I'll come down too.

Did you see my other thread. Autocrossing this saturday. Raceway Park. 9am. We gotta get to a race event together. You and I are the "rowdy" ones of our group

1) I'll be going to ATCO on a Fri. - not sure when, in the next couple of weeks.
2) yeah,saw the post-but fri is the MRS.& MIL BD so doing dinner Sat. nite with the family; wouldn't have time to get back.
They're autocrossing down here on Sept. 16.

Here's how to set the correct tire pressure:

1) Bring an air supply.

2) Drop the tire pressure down to 20 psi. Do a short burnout.

3) Examine the tire marks. If the mark is lighter in the center, then you need more air. If the mark is darker in the center, let some more air out. The goal is to have the black mark evenly dark all the way from the outside to the center.

4) It's faster to make big jumps in pressure at first and then zero in using smaller and smaller increments. For example, drop 10 psi first to 20 psi. Let's say it's too low. Then jump up 5 psi to 25. That's too high, so then you drop 3 psi to 22, which turns out to be perfect. That's 3 trials. If you just dropped 2 psi at a time, it would take you 4 or 5 trials to find it.

On the launch: Don't do a burnout in the water box. That's really only for slicks and drag radials. Street tires, with their deep tread, will pick up water in the tread and won't get rid of all of it during the burnout, and you'll drip water at the starting line. If you don't know what I'm talking about, you'll understand in about five seconds once you watch a few races. Instead, drive around the water and do just a short, 2 or 3 second burnout to clean the tires before you roll up to the starting line.

Have you ever been to the track? It's fun as heck. If you need some more pointers about how to stage and how to bracket race and stuff, let me know.

One handy thing about the Sky on track days is that we have an air compressor in the trunk to add back air. No spare of course in the rear glovebox, but in this case, it's a benefit.

Racing Voids Warranty?

Just a word of caution. My son took his Subaru Legacy to the track. Six months later his 5th gear went out while driving normally on the highway. Subaru refused the warranty claim because they were able to produce forum threads that look just like this one.

It was a $4000 lesson.
