Sears' Drift Sky WRECKED.

Formula D Summit Point...
Funny looking Sky. BUT Interesting. Exige-esque top.

Ben "Big Smoke" Schwartz did qualify, but he crunched it up pretty good and was towed off.

Quote:
Ben Schwartz No. 8 qualifying spot is going to be empty today. Last night during media ride-a-longs/open practice Ben Schwartz went off the track in turn 1 and crashed into the wall. The left side of his car is pretty beat up and Ben himself had a concussion. Ben is better today but the car is not.
On a lighter note....
Rhys Millen in the RMR Red Bull Pontiac GXP took home 3rd (again)

Damn Mopar.

Damn Mopar.

Clearly he wrecked because his wing fell off.

I've yet to find images of the wreck itself.

My guess is: It wrecked because it wasn't a Solstice....

It's interesting to see that Sky is still pretty stock compared to Rhys Millen's Solstice. It still appears to have all stock suspension arms, body panels (Rhys is all carbon), stock bumpers, duct work, etc.

Its a drift car, not a race car. It's not made for getting around a track fast. Please don't confuse the two.

I think you'd be suprised at how capable a 'drift' car is on a track.

Also, Rhys Millen's Solstice is a pure drift car as well. Except there's not much stock about it. All the body panels are carbon fiber, all the suspension arms are adjustable with spherical bearings, the coilover mounts have been removed and custom mounts for Penske adjustable coilovers with remote reserviors were welded on the frame, custom swaybar with different mounting points, Rotora brakes, twin master cylinders, V-mount intercooler and radiator, built 2.4L Ecotec with tubular exhaust manifold, HKS turbo, sheet metal intake manifold, F.A.S.T fuel management, HKS sequential transmission, etc, etc, amounting to 530 HP at the wheels. I got a chance to hang out with Rhys after the X-games and he said it was the fastest car he has ever driven...and it was still in the testing phase then.

Some pics of the car can be seen here -> http://www.solsticeforum.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=32973

Rhys is competitive with the top performers in Formula D and won a championship in the GTO.

Compare that to this Sky which appears to have stock brakes, stock brake booster and master cylinder, stock bodywork (even down to the duct work behind the front bumper), stock suspension arms, stock suspension mounts, KW coilovers, and who knows what engine package (probably a turbo 2.4L), and for some reason the radiator is mounted in the trunk (I assume it's the radiator because that's a dumb place for the intercooler). I would be interested to see if they fix the car and see how competitive it is.

Some are capable race cars, but they aren't race cars at the end of the day. Their intended purpose is not to get around a track fast. It's to do showy acrobatic things with the car. It takes a lot of skill (and suspension/horsepower) to be able to reliably slide a car around all over the place. But it has nothing to do with getting from point A to B the fastest. It's an exhibition, nothing more.

Yeah, I was just about to correct myself...I could see from the pic on this page that it is an LS1 or LS2.

And here are some engine pics!

We could also see what the Sears team member that is on this board says... and to fill us in on what happened and what their plans are on rebuilding.

I was at the race in Summit Point and disappointed the Sky didn't race, Rhys had 15 minutes to qualify when he finally got the car running, he was having transmission troubles. I offerecd him my car he laughed and said it wouldn't pass tech. He had been around the track 1 time in practice when the car broke. Second time around he qualified and then took third. They are back at it in Wall NJ September 8th. I will be there, I hope to see both the Solstice and the Sky and someone kick that damn Mopars a$$

Kinda resembles a trojan helmet with wheels. Just when you thought nothing could make these cars look bad...
