SKY Drifting?

Do any of you know if anyone is planning on getting the SKY into drift racing? I love watching Rhys Millen with the Red Bull drift team and would LOVE to see him side-by-side with his team mate in a SKY! The thought just creates a beautiful image.

I just bought tires for my Sky, and at almost a thousand dollars for a set of tires, I don't know anyone.

And that my friend is why Sponsors are so important! LOL!!

I'm getting close to 50 and have told my husband that if anyone gives me one of those red hats, I'm going to make it part of their anatomy. Then he got me my Sol and I want to put her on a local track but the COST! A roll bar or hard top, tires, course fees, etc. Then I started thinking: If those Red Hat Society women would be willing to Sponsor me, I'd wear a red helmet in a heartbeat! LOL! I could just hear it now "And the Red Hat Sol turns the corner, side by side with the Depends Miata"......LOL!!!

A like-minded Kappa sis !!
Did ya know that you can join the Red Hat Society after you turn 40 ? The 40-somethings were pink hats until they graduate at 50 to the red hats.
I have several friends that have the pink & red hats - and they give up pretty quickly on trying to get me to join. I just smile sweetly and say "until the red hat ladies are willing to hold ALL thier meetings at cruise-ins, runs, & car shows - just count me OUT!"

OMG - even a sponsorship would not get me to wear one of those purple & red getups.

If you come to Fontana wearing a red hat, I'll know that you have a new sponsor.

I always wanted to see a Mary Kay sponsored NASCAR. Pink!

At first, it was sort of a joke, but the more I think on it, the advertising benefits would massively outweigh the sponsorship costs.

Yeah, I saw Rhys in the Red Bull Solstice and McNamara in the Falken Sky both drift at Raceway Park in Englishtown NJ a few weeks ago too.

Unfortunately, the Sky made it through the qualifying round, but left the pavement and drove across the grass in the first elimination round, so he didn't place. Rhys Millen took third place in the Red Bull Solstice.

you can see some pics over on the solstice forum on these two threads

Yeah, his name is McNamara, and I believe he is actually Irish. He can only drive right-hand drive, so they converted the Sky to right-hand drive for him, as well as adding a V-8 that makes some ridiculously high horsepower.

LOL! That is freakin' nuts man. Clearly this guy spends quite a bit of time going -one- direction (sideways...). I bet that thing is a bitch to drive home after pulling it off the track since it mainly just wants to go one way all the time. (j/k)

If I had gobs of money to throw at new tires every few months I wouldn't be adverse to drifting. But at the end of the day, it is essentially a really really fun way to melt rubber.

Ben Schwartz drove it before and it was left hand drive. The back of the car also had a large intake port that went over a hardtop roof. I liked it better before....

i agree. Before the car with the intake port kept it's dimensions and looked like a sky. Now the car has an open top cage and kinda looks.......weird.

Besides........who needs sponsors to do some drifting in a sky?

The Saturn Sky that Darren McNamara (aka: D-Mac) races, is a completely new car for the 2008 race season. The right hand drive was done to accommodate the Ireland-based driver. It was built by ASD (AutoSport Dynamics) over this last off season. The Saturn Sky that Ben drove was NOT built by ASD and was totaled the summer of last year, on its second outing.
This Sky's body is carbon fibre. The molds were taken directly off of stock Sky body parts.
We have many pictures of the entire build at myspace.com/autosportdynamics

You know, ASD could really re-coup the investment money and create a larger fan base if they would use the carbon fiber molds they created and sell to the public - HINT HINT!!!

So Bogie - are you suggesting that NASCAR fans represent a large untapped demographic for comestics?

ASD is not only a race team, but also an automotive engineering company. The ASD parent company has a subsidiary product company for Solstice and Sky owners, with many new products under developement for these cars. Many of these products have been developed and used on the ASD Sky drift car.
It is our intent to offer carbon fiber body panels for the Sky with our new product line, coming to market under the solstice-sport.com and saturn-sport.com brand names. We expect to launch the new product line to coincide with the Saturn Sky Drift car being on display at the Sears corporate headquarters August 13-16, 2008.
We will definately make sure to keep y'all posted on the progress!
