There are two control screws on the motion sensor. One controls the radius of the outside zone, the other controls the radius of the inside zone. I put some earplugs in and spent an hour adjusting it the way I wanted it. I also adjusted the shock sensor.
I try to park at the edges of parking lots so there is not too much foot traffic around the car. The alarm wont stop a "smash & run" but when someone approaches the car and it starts chirping i'm hoping it makes them think.
