Intro to car care "101"

Greetings all, I was asked to jump over here to introduce myself. I'm the owner of Perfect Auto Finish in Roselle IL. I'm a sponsor on the Sol forum, which is where some of you know me. Since I'm not sponoring this forum, I can't talk openly about my products, however I can still help you out with questions with regard to car care. Here is some background on me, I started my areas first auto detailing clinics in 2001, I have since done over 200 of them. I teach auto detailing at some junior colleges and high schools. I write editorials for trade magazines and helped publish a book on how to start a detail business. I have detailed cars for high profile poeple like Oprah and Paul McCarthney. My work has been shown in magazines and I have a real passion for what I do. I also just released a professional DVD on how to detail like a pro. I spread myself pretty thin, hosting several forums, plus running my business. I encourage you to visit your sister fourm (Solstice) I have some sticky's at the top of the detail section which has threads with tons of info. p.s. I ordered a GXP 6 months ago, still no word on when I might get it.

Hello and welcome.

Thanks, I will visit that site, always good to know how to care for my future Sky. I do have one question, a salesperson told me the reason for a clear coat addon is to even out the peaks and valleys of the car finish and they put that on all their cars prior to sale. Is this clear coat addon really necessary or recomended? Does it really help to keep it clean?

Skyflare, lets first clarify what you are talking about; the "clear coat" is not put on at the dealership, clear coat is the unpigmented paint which protects your finish which is put on at the factory. Its about 4 mils thick or about the thickness of a piece of paper. when you detail, that is what you are trying to protect. I think in your post what you were referring to was the after market paint seal application. Car dealers make HUGE money on that item, yes its better for your car, (synthetics last 6 months compared to wax, of 30 days) if you go to the sol forum, you will see numerous threads I put up on this topic. The paint sealant I use in my shop costs around $12 a boottle, or $3 an appication.Dealers around me are charging upwards of $800-$1200 for one application, that is just plain crazy. how can they get away with that? because people are paying it, most people are uneducated in the detailing world, which is why I put out a DVD. welcome to detailing 101! Gary

I have also ordered and used Gary's products. His customer service and the products he sells are awesome! I highly recommend the use of his paint sealant, poly seal spray and the spray and shine. My car looks better than it did when I picked it up.

I say a big thanks to Gary and welcome to the forum!
