Turtle Wax ICE - Big Mistake

Price $16.95
Applied : 2008 Black Onyx Saturn Sky
Results: Pitiful
Review:
Enjoy the first wax of your life that cannot remove a simple water stain.
The "microfiber cloth" included leaves wonderful swirl scratches on your finish.
Car looks and feels like it was power spayed with armour-all

Suggestion after product destroys your finish:
Go get the car professionally buffed like I have to now.

It's strange how many different experiences individuals will have with a single product. It works great for me on my black car, and my black hummer.

I will note that while it advertises itself as a type of wax, it is not. It is a polish only and needs a wax coat afterwords.

Agreed. I just washed the heck out of it a couple times and dried it with my shammy. It's ok now. Thank god the crap came off. They say you can apply it in direct sunlight, I wouldn't suggest that either. Theres a few swirls on the trunk, I noticed it immediately and stopped. The dealer promised me a complimentary buff anyway, whereas when I finally bought the car it was after 5 and the shop crew was gone. So it's all good fellow SkyPeeps.

You said it best though. It is absolutely not a wax. Maybe it works better on top of a couple of established wax coats that this new ride doesn't have yet. Of course thats not on the label.. I'm exchanging that expensive stuff for good ol' paste compound and wax. Thats enough of a scare for now. I could use the exercise anyway.

Product suggestions that don't give you a heart attack are welcome.

I wash, then use the ICE, then wax. The ICE has done well to clean out little issues and anything worse I use compound.

I will say this, I just got my stuff in from Adam's and I won't use anything else again though

Hmmm. Created more issues than it cured for me. That stuff not going on any vehicle I own again. I am still disgusted in this product. But I respect your advice. And to each his own.
Neither of us are crazy. So I am theorizing the reason you and I have opposite results has to do that maybe you had base coats of wax on your car before you started using this stuff. Or the paint is older or something. I dunno. My ride is 06/08 manufacture. Are you 07' or something? And whats with the "microfiber cloth" included in the kit that put "micro scratches" on my trunk?

All I can say is if you bring a new black Sky home from the dealer and put this stuff on it as a first wax you are going to crap in your pants.

Tell me a little about the Adams' Stuff .

I agree with BLACK SKY. I bought it to see if it would remove a bird SH%T outline and it did absolutely nothing but scratch the paint.....a useless product....waste of money....

I drive an 08. Unless it's a "boutique cleaner" product I never use the pads/sponges the stuff comes with. Buy some good ones at an online car care store.

I won a $25 gift certificate from them here on the forum and bought some of their quick detailer and their vinyl and rubber conditioner. Their quick detailer has far out-shined the Maguires Gold Class detail mist that 95% of people use at car shows and the VRT pulled out an old wax stain on the hummer I thought would never come out. Plus I used both in the sunlight.

After using it and seeing their stuff, plus how nice they were to me and how they personally signed the invoice, I may be soon buying their Absolute Essentials Kit and replacing my entire cleaner shelf.

Yes it was shocked 5 minute old waterstains were absolutely unaffected by this product. I then spit on one spot, and it came right off. Maybe I should bottle that

Thats where my wash sponge and the shammy came from. But why Turtle includes a buff towel with the ICE product that feels soft but acts like #400 sandpaper still boggles the mind

Cool. I'll check that URL out. Gotta compound and wax this buggy somehow.
But whatever I use gets tested in a small indiscreet area like the rocker panel first. That ICE stuff goes on fast, so I had the whole car covered in like 5 minutes. No more of that

I use 3M "Quick Wax". A 3M rep gave me a bottle of it when I had the clearbra installed, and I have to say that I love it.

It gives a great shine (and IS a real wax). It also goes on nice and smooth without streaking or anything.

It gives me a result that is 80% as good as a full wax job, and takes about 20% of the time.

Unfortunately, it is hard to find, as most auto parts stores don't carry it. I just got several more bottles of it from this site...

Shop 3M: 3M Quick Wax, 39034, 16 oz

I highly recommend it.

Zaino is great but I don't have the patience. I will take 90% of the shine in 1/10th the time.

A bit of information that I took a long time to get through my head, and that many others seem to miss as well is the purpose of individual car cleaning items:

Car wash: Actual car wash is a lubricant/solvent that breaks down grime and makes it easier to wash off with a good sponge. It minimizes the amount of elbow grease necessary to remove dirt, and lubricates the paint so that it is not scratched when you rub across it

Compound: Compound is only for use on localized small scratches (at least by hand). It is very abrasive and "sands" the paint back into a good condition. You must be careful to the amount of buffing you do as you don't ever want to go past the clear coat.

Clay bar: A clay bar is used to pull incredibly small debris out of paint. Best way to tell if you need a clay bar is to "feel" the paint with your hand inside of a plastic walmart bag. If it feels smooth, your good, if it feels gritty time to clay bar. Clay barring is done with some form of "quick detail" mist for lubricant and ANY large debris should immediately be pulled off the clay bar or it will scratch your paint.

Polish: Polish is for shine, many people think that is the job of wax, this is simply not the case. Polishing fills in the micro scratches on the paint (left behind from debris and after using a buffing compound) and gives you an incredible shine. It is only to be used on a clean car and generally on a cool paint surface out of the sun.

Wax: Wax is a protectant and nothing more. While often times waxing your car will bring out a little more shine, it is simply because you did not do one of the prior steps properly and you cleaned the car a bit more with the wax. A good coat of wax should repel water and cause it to bead. It also protects paint from fading in sunlight. Many waxes CAN NOT get on trim, they will stain and blemish.

Quick Detailer: when not used for lubricating clay bars it can be used in between washes to get off stains and debris without damaging paint.

So make sure you are using the right item for the job, and when in doubt READ THE DIRECTIONS OF THE PRODUCT YOU ARE ABOUT TO USE. In the case of the OP, a polish would not have been the right product to get off a water stain. Using a car wash or quick detailer would have been proper.

I've used several products, but found my first choice (Zymol) still works best.

My brother put sand in my Zymol... He was jeoulous I had a Vette.

I use Meguires.

Use the scratch remover for scratches and swirls and the glaze for the rain spots. Polish for the super shine. The hitech wax for hi gloss (Nothing finish then the spray on touch up for small crap that gets on between washes.

Takes me like 4-5 hours to wash and wax my car.

I have used 1000 and 2000 grit on my car finishes before though. Just make sure you have some rubbing compound, glaze, polish and wax.

I feel your pain. Try living on a gravel road...the gravel dust sticks to it (ICE)like you coated the car in grease. It was actually a little funny for everyone else since it took me several hours to make my car beautiful and after one trip to the store I came back looking like a powdered donut!
