True Cold/Ram Air Induction

It's not shiny, but it works great.

We modify the lower intake box. Anyone who has seen what is under the stock intake box will know that there is no true opening for air to come in. Thats why open element intakes located there are more hype than anything. The hoses are "spiral" inside (they are the same ones used in F1 cars and what we use on the Noble cars) so they are less restrictive than it looks. The hoses are attacked to an opening in the lower box.

How do intakes make power? Velocity. Kid racers, internet tuners or forum jedi's might go with large intake pipes and filters thinking bigger=less restriction=more flow=more power. Thats not always the case. You increase power with an intake by improving your engines efficiency. Your engine can only suck in as much as it can suck in. Creating speed/velocity into the intake charge can create momentum to help efficiency. This happens when the velocity of the air is at a speed in which it starts to push in more air than the engine can suck in by itself. With the set up I am using, the top of the air box remains to help with pressurizing the air. The stock air filter also has more surface area than most open element filters that fit in that location. It also brings in air from the area we want and not from the front, side and back of the engine bay. The tubes route down to the front of the air dam allowing the engine to breath true cold air.

have you dyno'd it and measured real gain versus the traditional CAI?
I was looking at the lower air box today wondering if I could increase openings and hose air in....

I think for the ram air to work you have to be moving so the dyno will not give true reading unless you have a portable one. Right RPI

Ah, but with a "true" dyno setup, with say a really big fan, one could accurately simulate actual driving conditions. Something lacking from static "dyno" runs on most other CAIs.

I'll post the dyno numbers tomorrow.

Works for both. Its basic engine tuning 101.

At speed, there will be a "ram" affect but even at idle the engine will be able to breath cold ambient air from the cold air tubes. Our dyno testing simulates driving up to 70mph so there is plenty of air.

You have your dyno inside a wind tunnel?? I somehow doubt that is what you meant.

They are a sky, his is just pretty darn modified, haha

He switched the front grill and emblem, which is probably the biggest confusing part. However the engine and hood mounts are a sky.

Those who know me, know that I dyno and test EVERYTHING. Its not hype and its not a gimic where I hope no one will check for themselves. Again, I have NEVER seen a cold air intake for this car. Slapping a pipe and open element filter in the stock air box location does NOT make it a CAI. Its like putting a DD bra on an A cup woman and saying she has large breasts now. They are sucking in any cooler air.

We use Pattern fans that are controlled with the dyno to simulate wind at certain road speeds.

The only mods on the car for this dyno was our GT exhaust, GT downpipe (3in hiCe load cat), and intake modification. Here is the dyno from today.

With just those 3 mods, we are nearing the 200hp at the crank! Our car completely stock made 148whp. We are working on a tune to take advantage of the new parts. I'm hoping to get around 170-175whp with some tuning.

So you got about 12-14 WHP gain from that setup??

You ought to sell that as a kit!

From just the intake alone. If anyone wants to dyno their shiny intake against mine, let me know.

Your car looks like Frankenstein. Will this work for someone who wants to keep the upgrades hidden (ie. grill in place, etc)? I like performance upgrades, but want to keep the basic look intact.

Yes, the basic concept is the same. The grill might block some of the airflow but you'll be sucking in cold air vs slapping on a filter inside the engine bay.

This is too hilarious.

I extended the runners a little bit. lmao
