7 quarts or is it 5?

Had my oil changed at the local Saturn. Ol change special going on and bought 5 quarts of Mobile 1. Thought it was not bad at $28.50 for the change and $19 for the oil. Service guy calls and says your car takes 7 quarts not 5 because of the turbo. hmm...manual says 5 for both. Which is it, 5 or 7? Ok for the Saturn shop or am I getting the scre... here?

If they put 7 quarts in, you have problems! Check your oil level to make sure they did not over fill it.

My husband's ex for several years took her car to a place that would charge her for 8 quarts of oil @ every oil change - her car only held 5.5 quarts.

Report it!

That is complete BullSh?t! You need to make sure you report it to Saturn. Please save your invoice. Did it show 7 quarts? Crooks like that don't need to be selling Saturns.

$19 dollars for 7 quarts of mobile 1 sounds like a deal. Tell them to put 5 in the car and hand you the other 2.

Yeah, I am upset with this one. They swear that is the case (7 quarts), the service rep, as I stood there, called their sister dealership service guy in Oak.... and was told, "yes 7 quarts that is what we do too". This even after I produced my Sky manual which says 5 quarts! The mechanic came and talked to me claiming that the turbo sump is bigger. They could produce no shop specs on the capacity of the sump for 7 quarts or the need. They did show me the service bulletin on changing the oil which I had already reviewed here, but that didn't change anything. To be honest I am losing my faith here. This is not over...to be continued. I will contact Saturn Corp. The truth will be known.

AnonNomis: The reason I am steamed is they charged me the 2 quarts at $9 each. The $19 (Walmart) was my cost for the 5 quarts Mobile 1.

BTW - On the oil level...With the dip stick that we have it is a little hard to tell exactly where the oil level is, (if it is above the indicator). I can tell you that it is not below the top notch (which is the full indicator). the dip stick is actualy a wire cable with a 2 inch oblong knob, with hash marks, at the end of the cable. The oil does seem to be up on the cable, the only doubt is whether the oil on the cable is from sliding the stick in/out. My gut says no, it is overfilled.

Being I assume you have an RL sky, i'll clear it up for you. While your car might actually only take 5 quarts, MY car takes 7, lol. It took this long for the tech's to understand that the ION RL's take just about 7 quarts. I bet the tech just assumed that all RL's take 7 quarts, whether or not he's right (apparently he's not).

Call Saturn - they will get it straightened out &/OR offer you a coupon or two for free oil changes.

After a lot of phone calls, these guys are still insisting that my 07 sky RL takes 7 quarts of oil. Can you believe this! The service manager claims he will give me a copy of the bulliten which overrides the owners manual. He says he has a call into Saturn and is waiting their response. Now that Skyfury has a little color in her oil...it is clearly overfilled. All this even after i told them that too. Waiting for another phone call. You will need to pm me if you really want to know the dealer I am dealing with.

I just had mine changed yesterday and they charged me for five. I just checked the dipstick and it is full. if your dipstick shows full, they ripped you off to the tune of two quarts.

ANY good mechanic NEVER runs an engine after an oil change without checking the level first...NEVER run the engine with too much oil in it. . did they even check it after adding 7 quarts? they should have known something was wrong... Sounds like a very incompetent service department.

No, it's overfull...probably 2 quarts. And they didn't call me back today, those scumbags!!!

That aside, while at work I had an opportunity to make a couple of personal phone calls (no one does that, right) and wanted to share more drama with my circumstance. I decided to call the Pontiac place right accross the street from the dealership in this saga. Phone call...Pontiac...of... how can I help you? Hello, I need to find out how many quarts of synthetic oil I will need for an oil change on Solstice GXP? Let me connect you with service...Service this is ... can I help you? Yes, I am trying to find out how many quarts of oil I will need for an oil change on a Solstice GXP? Let me connect you with parts...hello this is parts ...can I help you? Yes, I am trying to find out how many quarts of oil I will need for an oil change on a Solstice GXP? Let me connect you with service...NO wait! They just sent me to you - Ok, just a second... Looks like 5 quarts. 5 quarts? Yes, but that's synthetic oil. Thanks, you looked this up, right? You didn't just ask someone, (in my head I am thinking he probably used the force or something he answered right away)? Yes, 5 quarts, synthetic, it's in the computer.

Sigh, and they are right accross the street, too! Funny, if this wasn't so serious!

Those Guys are Dangerous!!

Perhaps they just put 5 in and are trying to con to pay for 7? IF the manual was wrong don't you think Saturn would of sent us new manuals by now? Hell they sent new ones because 2 pages were back wards last year..the info was correct, it's just that the pages were numbered wrong. I cannot fathom the ignorance of this service department, to me it incomprehensible and the most idiotic & incompetent thing I have ever heard, preposterous--If I were you, I would drain all the oil and see how much is in there. YOU definitely DO NOT run that car with 2 quarts over filled, the manual says that two--"DO NOT OVERFILL" Page 246 STATES "Do not add too much oil. IF the engine has to much oil that the oil level gets above the upper mark (on the dip stick) that shows the proper operating range, the engine could be damaged!!.I think I rather trust my cars dipstick than those dipstick idiots working there-- Page 331 Engine Oil capacities w/ filter, 2.0L L4 and 2.4L L4 5 quarts. I suppose this dealer knows better than the cars manufacturer..Unbeleivable--

My service manager told me that in no way shape or form does the 2.0 need syn oil...he said to use dino oil.

any truth in that?

Man, sucks about this over fill situation. Sucks even more that they didn't call you back today. I suppose they don't care about customer service, or about screwing up someone's car.

Unreal, on a turbo? On the 2.0L L4 engine, starts on page 247. First paragragh states clearly and I quote:

"Your vehicle's engine requires a special oil meeting GM Standard GM4718M, such as Mobil 1 or equivalent. Oils meeting this standard may be identified as synthetics. However, not all synthetics will meet this GM standard. You should look for and use only an oil that meets GM standard GM4718M.

Notice: If you use oils that do not have the GM4718M Standard designation, you can cause engine damage not covered by your warranty

Top of Sky manual, page 248--

"Your vehicles engine is filled at the factory with a synthetic oil which meets all requirements for your vehicle"...

Just make sure whatever oil you use on a Redline, it meets GM Standard GM4718M. I can't imagine anyone using dino oil in that car, with the turbo? you will coke your turbo for sure-- You guys need to read the manufacturers manual, its the bible for your car..Sure you might perhaps can get away with dino, but why would you chance it? AND the BIGGIE, does that dino oil meet GM's standard for the R/L? to save a couple bucks at the cost of your engine/turbo--
Be smart my man, use a qualified synthetic-- The factory puts Mobil 1 in the R/L when they ship them out.. Heck I use Mobil one on my 2.4L -- its like mothers milk--

I did read the manual...but my question is, despite the manual, is there truth in what the service mgr said. He swore up and down that everyone is going to tell me to use synthetic but it is absolutely not necessary with this car.

Now, I certainly woul dput syn in my beloved vehicle, but just wondering why the service manager of one of the largest (in the US?) Saturn dealerships (Troy, MI) would say that to me.

Ignorance & mis-information comes in many packages. All I got to tell you at this point, that is HIS personal opinion. It is in error I might add In MY humble opinion (you see we all have one ), never the less it is his opinion. Look at this other service manager, he swears the R/L takes 7 quarts of oil, yet he used the correct type--Perhaps your manager and skyflares manager should open up a shop-- Don't believe everything these mis-guided uninformed guys tell ya--Do your homework, believe the manual--thats all, I again reiterate what I posted above--use syn, screw that guys opinion, just make sure they only put in 5 quarts--LOL--

Yep, that's why I'm asking...doing my homework. I see no reason not to put Syn in anyway, other than price.

And, since opinions are like a-holes (everyone has one), I take everything with a grain of salt, look at a few reliable sources, etc, etc.

Still can't believe they may have put 7 qts in. If they did, I'd be asking for a new engine.
